I'm an Indianapolis resident and want to go to NAMM, but I'm not officially suppose to. If anyone has any extra passes, please send one my way. I'd love you forever....

If you're coming here, get in touch, maybe we could shake hands while your here or I could give you some pointers on the city that all that advertising hype won't tell you about (like the BS that Indy is the 12th largest city... unfortunately its much smaller).

Craig,

One of the reps at InfoComm said forget about finding an open restaurant on Sunday evening...

I hope he's wrong.

Indy! Really? I wonder if many keyboard manufacturers or soft synth developers will be there? I can drive to Indy in a few hours. It would be nice to see some of the faces behind the computers.

Oh Gezzz. I cannot go unless I loose 20 lbs. \:\)

This is the first year of Summer NAMM at Indy, and probably the last. It's a brief stopover while NAMM tries to find a permanent home for the summer show. Next year is in Austin.

It's going to be a very small show, mostly guitar and drum manufacturers, and even those are taking small staff and small booths. I won't be going, even though I have a couple of exhibiting clients there.

Keep in mind that the Summer show is nothing like the Winter NAMM... it's always been a rather small, regional event, rather than the bombastic nature of the winter show. that can be cool, though, since you can get more one-on-one time with the manufacturers.

But it is not a strong technology show, so I wouldn't counnt on a big presence from most of the pro audio and keyboard/software companies.

- Jeff

They have the show set as a pressure to make the Nashville CC larger, supposedly because so many manufactureres could'nt get in.

Indy, is as broken up and Nashville. hallwise and we will see if Nashville's city faathers do expand as per their response after the show bailed.

Austin in July, now there's a good idea.

Lot's of clubs an all and it will only be about 100 degrees.

On the future, alternating through summer 2008 Jeff, sorry to say.

Yea, I do know that Indianapolis is a hot spot for Conventions since we built the Conseco field house and other places... we also have a new dome on the way. I heard that besides Las Vegas we supposedly have the most Convention Center square footage around. I don't know about that though. Small cities like this try to hype up their stuff to get the world to notice. They probably just built the largest bathrooms around and added that into the figures.

As for the pointers on the city, I don't where to start without questions, but I'll do my best if you give me a question. I'll say this, the MMS (Midwest Music Summit) is going on during that time, which in the past has never been all that great. 75% of the acts were local and there really weren't that many good ones. It's fun for us in this small city, but I don't know how hot it is for outsiders, especially one's from bigger cities or places like California. That being said, I don't know what they have planned this year, and it does seem to get bigger each year. I'll have to give it a closer look. Also; the years before they have held nearly all the shows in the Broad Ripple area venues and the underage venues (the "artistic" district of Indy) which is several miles away from downtown, and downtown is where the convention will be.

Anyway, thanks for the pass, and ask away everyone!

Hi gaotu

I'll be at NAMM in July. Questions?

1) Best restaurants with meals under $10 ???

2) Best attractions (for those that may be bored with NAMM)???

3) Your favorite shopping mall??

My brother went to IU and being a golf nut at the time, I just had to drive there several times to play a few rounds. I like Indy somewhat. Played a lot of fun courses in the area. I used to collect logo golf balls from the courses I played and I had about ten from your area. I'd have to dig em out to remember them.

I laughed when I saw this, we have a reservation every night of the show at St. Elmo's. Guess I'll have to try the Shrimp Cocktail.

I have a feeling this show will be lightly attended. Next year should be a blow out. Austin in July, no worse than Nashville in July!

1) In the downtown area, very few really. The Red Eye Cafe is a good one (and it's 24 hours). There's a few breweries with restaurants in them, and they're all good. They'll be easy to spot because 2 of the 3 have big barrel things on the outside of their buildings indicating that they're breweries. They all have good beers. They are: Alcatraz, The Ram, and Rock Bottom. You should be able to get something good for under $10 there too.

2) Sadly enough, I'm not sure there are any good attractions. We have a zoo and a "science center" called the Children's Museum but unless you're a kid you won't dig that, and the zoo isn't all that. We have a few museums, but The Indianapolis Art Museum is the good one and has recently been remodeled (I haven't been in since the complete remodel). If you want to hang out with the cool people then you have to go to Broad Ripple. In Broad Ripple is our semi-famous scenester dive: The Alley Cat, and near-by to Broad Ripple resides our historic, and very small, but most musically open-minded venue called The Melody Inn. You should check out the very center of our town wear the War Memorial is. It's a pretty cool structure and I think they'll still let you go up in it (although that's no big deal). There is also a strip on the NE side of downtown called Mass Ave. (or Massachusetts Avenue) where a bunch of cool, artsy shops and a few bars are. Unforunately, since the town's coolest, hippest coffee shop moved from that street, it has taken a small hit on the cool factor.

3) Other than the fashion mall (which probably is the best if you're looking for sweet designer clothes), which is way way up on the NE side of town (about 12 miles from downtown), the obvious choice is the Circle Center mall, which is intertwined with all the major downtown buildings and most of the restaurants I mentioned. You can't miss it. It's pretty cool, and there's a part of it that hangs over the streets that looks like an alien space ship getting ready to tractor-beam you in.

Actually, the summer show in Chicago used to be the big show. Back in the olden days, they would fill the McCormack Center (my dad took me to a NAMM show at the Conrad Hilton hotel before you were born, you whippersnapper).

I would like to see the summer show in the Northeast - Boston, Toronto, New York (too expensive), even Cleveland.

That CC is a hodge-podge, broken up as much or more then Nashville.

As far as space, that's local hype, Anahiem, Vegas, CHicago, Orlando and ATlanta are all adjioining and not compartmented.

Look at the floor map, it's like a mouse maze.

NAMM feels they will draw from the regions larger cities, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas..they assume that because so many hub distributors are there, it's a slam dunk that attendees will also travel the interstates for the same easy access.

They are wrong, the folks down south are blowing off attending.

That would be McCormick Place. Saying McCormick Center to a Chicagoan would be tantamount to saying The Empire State Highrise to a New Yorker of the Golden Fence Bridge to a San Franciscan. ;\)

And yes, McCormick Place is a wonderful, big box. The "new" McCormick added much needed space, too. Sad to say McCormick Place management screwed the pooch on keeping NAMM as a client by giving away "their" week to another client, fully expecting NAMM to choose a week around the same time.

Nashville is in a precarious position regarding the building of a new convention center. I don't know the specifics of what they want to do, but the city (and the state) have taken on bad deals regarding the Arena and the Coliseum that are costing taxpayers a lot of money they didn't expect to be paying. So even with local businesses (such as the one I work for) clamoring for a bigger convention center, getting support in the community is very difficult in a time of tight budgets, Tenn Care health insurance being rolled back and people being dropped from coverage, and dire need of more money for schools, police, fire and other neccesities.

I don't see a new convention center in Nashville's near future, though I hope I'm wrong. The whole of downtown has been redeveloped or is set to.

I'll miss summer NAMM in Nashville! Saw some great shows that were part of NAMM, some that weren't (free tickets to Doobies/Chicago one year), went to some great clubs, and a couple of other occasions that my wife doesn't need to read about. Come on back y'all!

I visited Indy's Circle Center a month or two ago, and it was really nice, as was the downtown area. Looked like lots more to do (restaurants, shopping) within walking distance of the convention center than in downtown Nashville.

I won't miss Nashville or Nashville's convention center, and I'm glad that the show is going to alternate between a couple of different cities. I hope that the people who visit Indy are pleasantly surprised - I think they will be.

For a list of exhibitors and other info, go to http://www.namm.org .

They've invested quite a bit of money into the Indy area to get it looking like a city on its way up, rather than the rest of the state. \:\) I've been to Indiana a few times but never went as far as Indy, I'm not a racing fan. Some folks that have gone to Indy said its a vast improvement over the way it looke 20+ years ago. I wish some "eastern" cities could follow suite.

That CC is almost as hard to get as Los Angeles...

Oh well the show part will be static, but first I'll be headed to Full COmpass, then flying to NYC, then to Nashville, then driving to Indy, after that to a potential distributor in an adjacent state, then back to Fort Wayne to see Mr. S. Then back to LA LA...

A very full three weeks.

Thanks for the badge offer, but someone from Hosa has already helped me out in that.

Yea, I will say the city does look a lot nicer than it did just 10 years ago. A lot of remodeling, adding the canal walkway, and just plain good maintenance. It is a clean downtown for a city.

I have just one last question. Which area is better to stay in? Is it better to stay near the airport or the speedway? The speedway rooms I'm looking at are $4 a night cheaper, but what is the surrounding neigborhood like?

Don't be sorry, ask away anyone!

The surrounding area of Speedway is a little more trashy, but not bad or unsafe really. (The "center" of speedway looks kind of nice and has a racing theme appearance provided by the city though.)

The airport is the airport... There's really not much around there except for the airport, hotels, convention centers, more of the airport, more of the airport (owned by FedEx) and not much to do unless you go the a comedy club or whatever.

In reality though, Speedway and the airport are pretty much neighboring areas of the city so you're not far from the action either way. Just a little farther at the airport, but probably closer to an interstate. However, I'm betting you'll get a nicer room near the airport, although I don't really know what kind of hotels are in the speedway area. Although that's where the big race is, I don't think there's really any "sweet" hotels there.

Thanks! Good advice and insight - I just became a member of NAMM and got my pass in the mail this week. I used to live in Indy so I am tempted to go, but I am expanding my product line and my new stuff (not cables) may not be ready in time. I have been search to maybe share a booth with someone. If you know anybody that might be interested PM me.
