I hate how Moby makes himself look in pictures.
As much as I like EQ, I will have to throw out the current issue ASAP because I can't stand to look at Moby mugging on the cover.
He's always making the stupidiest "I'm so cool" wide-eyed, flat-mouthed, confused little boy expressions that are just oh so contrived and pretentious.
Like his music, hate his music, whatever.
But looking at his pics, I can't help but think what a dick.

When you are a bitch, you don't need an excuse to bitch!

(but seriously, take a look at that guy's mug. It's like he's trying to say "look how wierd, wacky and David Byrne I am." It's just like, Uggghhhhhh.)

I can't remember what he looks like.
Probably because I gave up my EQ subscription a while back.
(Ahem.)
BTW... has anyone noticed that the "Forum" link on the Eqmag.com site errors out ("no forum selected")?

maybe he's got an overactive thyroid gland.
Last time i ate in a restaurant alone there was some lady with that issue. Also her eyes were slightly crossed. I realise she can't help the way she looks, but she seemed to be staring at me the whole time i was there. It was really starting to creep me out.
I sure hope it wasn't as painful as it looked.

Just so I'm not misunderstood... I have enormous respect for some of the people involved with EQ (and I'd mention at least one by name if I wasn't afraid of embarrassing him with praise) -- and there's much of merit in the magazine. But there is a personality/celebrity thing going on in the overall direction of some of the content that I find, let's say, distracting.
But I'd like to say that I sincerely thank EQ and the MP family for these boards and for their involvement in the music scene. And my recent tour of the "magazine side" of these boards left me impressed with the usability and attractive design.

I dunno.
Look at other celebrities and how they appear in photo shoots.
Reznor is gloomy. Navarro is sexy. Moby is dorky.

Maybe we could move this entire thread over to the one about concrete domes. Then we could refer to him as "Moby in the adobe"

Reminds me of Laurie Anderson's story of how she left her apartment one day, and someone said to her "oh no, not another Laurie Anderson clone."

We need variety! That's just the point! If ONLY Moby would be his dorky self. That would be cool. But instead, he's acting all "ooooohhhh look at me... I'm Mr. cool boy.... oooooohhhh .... let me try this wierd expression .... how bout this one..... ooooh.... do I look cool yet?"

Perhaps the compromise is just to deface the picture. I think that's what I'll do. Perhaps I'll magic marker on one of those censurship bars across his face, you know, the type of bars usually reserved for lower bodily regions or anonymous witnesses.
Otherwise, I like the issue just swell. I particularly like the "Special Advertising Section" at the end that gives little pics and descrips of popular gear. It reminds me of stuff I'd like to buy. I know that this is paid advertising (and I should therefore be wary of it), but I actually think it's a great section, and displays stuff in an easy to understand way. I see it and think "oh yeah, I've been meaning to pick up one of those." I wouldn't mind a regular section of pics and descripts of gear you all like, to remind me of things that I may want.

That's Moby!?
Thought it was Phil O'Keefe! :p (At least the Hotel pic.)
Nursers - I like Moby's latest single too, assuming it's the same one (Lift Me Up?) There's also a really good future single called "Raining Again" but other than that the new album's a bit of a let down in my opinion.

I met him at a lecture he gave at UCSB recently. I think he just really does look like that.
Nice guy... very bright... was a philosophy major, too.

Oh You!
It's just the opposite!
That's the problem.
He takes himself way way way too seriously. That's what's all over the pictures.
It's like, c'mon guy, loosen up.
A friend of mine did a show with him and was like, stop taking yourself so damn seriously, you little mobyhead.
Anyway, the issue (all the levels of meaning of that word) is now resolved for me. I reread Craig's review of the Firepod which I enjoyed, tore my name off the cover, and left it in a public place for the enjoyment or annoyance of others.

I was moderator for a panel discussion in New York in the early early 90s. It had a bunch of luminaries (including Wendy Carlos), and Moby was added at the last minute. I think I was the only one there familiar with Go.
Anyway, he looked just like Sherman of Sherman and Mr. Peabody, I think he even had madras shorts. He mostly deferred to the "luminaries" but made occasional comments, all of which were cogent and thoughtful.
At one point, I asked what the panel thought could be improved about the user interfaces of the day. Moby asked "What's a user interface?" One of the panelists (not Wendy, of course!) sort of groaned, gave a look like "What a moron," and started laughing. Well, Moby's previous comments pegged him as anything but a moron, and I felt it was very rude to treat him like that. So I went semi-ballistic and said "Look, the reason why he's asking that question is because he actually uses this stuff. He's sold a lot of records and he connects musically with a lot of people, and I thought that's what it was all about anyway. Maybe the fact that he doesn't think about what he does, he just does it, is why he's successful."
I saw him play in concert later that night, and he was good although most of what he played to was sequenced. Still, he seemed like someone with staying power. He's a pretty unlikely "star," so more power to him for his success.
