Okay, maybe "urgent" isn't the word. Peraps desperate?
I have been trying to put together a home studio for months. I'm trying to develop an ergonomic work cell that will be a joy to work in, and it's not going so well...
I plan to put my main powered monitors (Event PS8's) on either side of my DAW video display, on a 60"x30" wood table. This puts the monitors about 30 inches from my body (angled in an equilateral triangle), about six inches from the video display, and about 14-18 inches from the front of the table. I may put them on small 2-3 inch wood stands to raise the level a bit.
Here are my questions:
1) Will the six inch distance from the video display cause a problem? The monitors are shielded, but I don't know if there is a limit. I am going to write Event as well.
2) What will the expanse of table do to the sound (the area between the front of the speaker and the front of the table - approximately 18 inches)? I would think this would reflect the sound upward, but I could be wrong. Is this a problem?
3) Is 30" a good listening distance for NFM's?
The table/desk idea is great from an ergonomics perspective, but I don't want to mess up my mixes any more than they already are.
Thanks for any help,
Wiggum

Hey Wiggum, 1.) If your speakers are sheilded, you should be OK at 6" from the monitor. (I wouldn't get any closer though.) -And with monitors & speakers being on a table, don't forget to keep your magnetic media away from them.
2.) I have read in several articles you are not supposed to have any obstacles in your "line of site" when near-field monitoring. You should try for a direct, non-reflective sound in the sweet spot.
3.) With the PS8's, (8 inch woofer) I would try to get about 36", maybe more, to allow the low-low end to "cycle" before hitting your ears.
You may want to look into a pair of free-standing monitor stands, about $100.00/pair. That will solve all these issues.

Thanks Hippie,
Presently my monitors are sitting on 42" Quicklok stands which I loaded with about 50 pounds of shot (each one must weigh about 60 lbs). They worked great when my monitors were surrounding my keyboards, but they are too tall for my DAW station.
I thought about getting some 36" stands (same ones), but I was hoping to avoid this purchase with the desk. Right now my DAW sits on a computer cart, and there is nowhere to put my legs. Long mixing sessions are uncomfortable to say the least.
I'll keep looking,
Thanks.
