I am really pleased with how my mixes translate on various/multiple speakers/systems. My studio and monitors are both great for mixing as I have spent a good deal of time with acoustical treatment of the room. My personal computer speakers are total crap, everything distorts except guitars and vocals. ALL drums sound horrid and all bass is just mush, regardless of the music being played. People send me to thier MP3's and I can't hear them worth beans so I can't make any real judgments. I think your idea of actually mixing on small cheap lo-fi speakers is terrific. I guess my only concern is when people 'rip' CD's. The mix then will be off. I'm gonna try for something in-between.
