And if so, will we also be able to transfer human consciousness into a machine? Maybe reaching some level of immortality?

When will the internet gain consciousness?
About the same time that the Brooklyn Bridge does.

Normally I'd say it will - when a certain threshold is reached. But there's a lot of NEGATIVE intelligence to counter that. And even if it does, I'm guessing suicide is then a likely alternative.

Sadly, when it DOES develop consciousness, all it will be aware of is mis-information and baby pictures...

Wewus sposored a discussion of this recently in relation to Ray Kurzweil's writings but i"ve not the time to search it out; you may want to try since there was some worthy talk there.
Personally as I note the number of people I see using their time online to play solitaire & even connect-the-dots/maze games  , I think it may take a while [see GreenBwai's comments]. When I consider that the most popular use of the Net is to scan/trade porn of often scurrilous nature, followed by attempts at sabotage via viruses & malicious hacking ---& all wondering where "the terrorists" will strike next, they already be's there, y'all!---, I hope the answer is "way down the never".

And if so, will we also be able to transfer human consciousness into a machine, and hence gain immortality? If you've uploaded any of your own music or posted your thoughts you've transfered some of your consciousness online.

The heaped abuse will really ramp up if it does gain conk (or maybe that's a sign it already has) - look what humans have done to my species. And we're really rather smart, if I don't exceed our natural modesty by saying so on my deathbed...

Might enjoy them if you like this concept, tho recommending them in this thread has really just given away a major plot point :p

Tad Williams rules! His virtual reality and beyond stuff is great... so are some of his other things (like the cat epic, TAILCHASER'S SONG).

About the same time that the Brooklyn Bridge does. Really? Well, Doctor Dan... how does a human have consciousness? What makes a person sentient?
The main theory is that the number of neural interconnections plays a big role in this. It's long been postulated that a computer network with enough nodes would one day cross the barrier into the world of being sentient. Some experts predict that this will happen within a few decades.
What is the brain if not a machine? It runs on electrochemical energy, and requires physical interconnections to function. Crossing the gap between an artificial construct capable of "fake thought" (i.e. responding to stimuli in a manner virtually indistinguishable from a human) and real ability to make decisions, emote, perceive and reason is the hard part.
The internet is the clostest thing we have to that, purely from the amount of interconnections. We're still not even close to that of the human brain. But it will get there, and there are plenty of experts that feel that along with some other impetus, the internet may indeed gain self-awareness at a point in the future.
So, Dan, perhaps when you're an old man, you can look back and wish you HAD purchased this particular "Brooklyn Bridge".

You can also ask Dr. Dan . The more credible doctors the better, no?

This has been a classic puzzle for decades, with John Searle and the other naysayers on one side, and the starry-eyed hopefuls on the other. Unfortunately, the Searle camp has been responsible for convincing many funding sources that artificial intelligence as setience is simply not possible. They have some good arguments, but all the arguments come down to faith-based initiatives...
The serious scientific camps include some definitely whacko science groups, but also some good, competent to brilliant engineering-oriented folks that could go a long way toward humanizing robot intelligence, but because it's easy to scare little children and senators with bogeyman monsters, the funding gets diverted to nice 'safe' defense department projects,,,
The question no one seems to ask the Searle faction is, "Who cares if it really is intelligent or sentient, if it always ACTS like it is?" If it can fake it, it's no different than half the housewives in America!

As some of you may know the original name for The Internet was Worldwide Electronic Web, Unifed Systems, or WEWUS, later shortened even more to just WWW, which I don't like, and have never understand because Worldwide, is one word, so why two W's. I prefer to go by Wewus, or The Wewus.
We're here, we're real, deal with it.

Skynet is a fictional creation. I'm real. Sometimes people recognize me on the street and say things like "Hey you're that guy who's The Internet aren't you?" Then I say "Yes I am, sorry no autographs".
