Tim and Neil Finn are currently the best pop songwriters in the world. As good as, or better, then Lennon/McCartney. This latest album certainly adds to that.
But, there is something odd about the sound on this CD. It's hard to put a finger on. Like too homogenized? Like all the instruments were recorded with the same type of mic? It almost seems like everything has the same timbre! It's something I notice everytime I put it on...but then the songs take over, and I don't notice it anymore.

The sound (mix/recording)is less than I'd hoped for, but the songs are great. I hope they come back through the DC area soon.

I hear that. I always find Neil's solo stuff lacks in the production department. Not for lack of trying but it doesn't "fit" somehow. The songs are always amazing...

Mitchell Froom really nailed the CH stuff but you don't want to go backwards. How about Rick Rubin for the Finns?

Rubins an odd choice perhaps but think about it. All of Rubins productions seem to capture the artist in an organic manner. The Finns if anything, are not in need of a coverup. They need to be exposed. I want to hear the cracking of the voices, the tandem inhaling before the chorus. I want to hear the truth as they see it.

Neil! Call Rick Rubin!

As a lurker round here and New Zealander, I feel you folk need to be commended on your superb good taste!
I always thought it was incipient nationalism impinging on my own good taste that had me believing them the best popular songwriters since the Beatles ... But anyway, back to lurking.

Welcome Cluster!

I always thought of Crowded House as BEING the southern hemisphere's "Beatles". \:\)

Nursers, I'm ignoring you because if I answered you, I'd have to admit to something that I'd rather not... In my own defense, I don't get out much... but there's always Amazon, so I guess that excuse doesn't really wash, does it? \:\(

You Know, Lee, I think you're right. I've had difficulty with this record, despite loving the songs. The production doesn't complement the songs to my mind, and sometimes actually obscures them. One of my favourite tracks of all time is Tim 'n' Neil's "It's only Natural". Produced by Mitchell Froome, mixed by Bob Clearmountain. Perfect. But you're right, they've done that, and Rick Rubin does have the gift of getting to the heart of the artist.
Or maybe it's just a slow grower..... trouble is, I'm so busy playing and recording, I don't get the time to listen to all that great music that's out there. I've got a nice long drive up to Sweden next week, perfect opportunity to catch up on some stuff. Any recommendations? I hear the new John Hiatt is hitting the spot.

Exactly

I tell you what - send me $50 and I will order it for your from Amazon. Sounds fair to me ;\)

To me, songs like 'Homesick' and 'Disembodied Voices' make the album worth buying on their own.

Really? I've been waiting for this. I've been a John Hiatt fan since the late 70's! But, as things can happen, I lost interest around '95. Great songwriter. Cool voice. Fantastic performer. What's the CD called?

It's called Master of Disaster. Haven't heard it yet, but trusted songwriter mate says he's on form. I still can't get enough of Crossing Muddy Waters, his best work in my opinion.

$50 USF or $50 Aussie monopoly money?

$50 USF is way too much, and $50 AMM isn't enough to buy a pack of gum. :p ;\) \:D

I got this album a few days ago - brilliant. Mastered by Bob Ludwig, mixed by Bob Clearmountain, it's just a damn good album all round. Strongest stuff Neil and Tim have put out since Crowded House days.
Grabbed this from iTunes. Thanks for the tip.
