Thought this might make a fun thread

I'm curious if anyone has ever spotted a Star out on the street and what was the Artist's personality like once they were discovered. Were they good??? Bad???

I'll start it off with a couple experiences:

A couple years ago I was at the piano bar in one of the nicer hotels in town. There was a voice from behind and a tap on my shoulder "man have you got a cigarette"??? When I turned around it was Eddy Van Halen. I made a little small talk and he asked me if I would do him a favor. I said "sure" and he asked me if I could drive him to a convenient store so he could get some batteries and cigarettes. Well what was I gonna say ... we ended up in the car and went to the store. When we got back to the hotel he said "thanks and here's 4 tickets to the show Sat night".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------Another time I ran into Sammy Hagar in the mall in Pasadena. When he knew he's been spotted he went "Shhhhhhhhh Don't tell anybody"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

A friend of mine spotted Eric Clapton and Roger McGuinn riding in the car together on an LA freeway. They tried to get closer but once they were spotted Eric hit the gas hard.

Hope to hear a few other good ones.

Must have been about 1977, a little music store called Ligocki's in Port Huron, MI. Ed (the owner) had somehow stumbled across a '59 Les Paul (drool)...I couldn't afford it, but it had been sold (for a big dollar sum, but still about 1/4 of what one would fetch today).

Well, it so happens that Kiss was in town for a show that night. I'm hanging around Ligocki's (as per my custom) and this stretch limo pulls up. Seems someone had told Ace about the guitar in Ligocki's (which had been sold by then). Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley came in with their entourage. I wasn't really a Kiss freak (never really have been) so I wasn't like totally awed in their presence, but I did make a little small talk with Stanley about Gibson Firebirds (which he and I both had in common). He struck me as rather arrogant at the time...not intolerably so, but the 'tude was definitely there. Go figure. Was kinda weird to see him and Ace sans makeup, though, in those days when they always had it on...

Russ,

Unbelievable! When someone down here wants a lift to the convenience store, they're usually a murderer or something like that. You get "friggen" Eddie Van Halen!

I have worked with several "stars" and for the most part, they are regular people - just with lots of cash and fame. Maybe next time I work with, say, Shaq, he'll ask me to give him a lift to the Circle K for a microwaveable burrito.

Yea I've "worked" with lots of stars too, but I'm more curious outside of the studio. Out on the street. In the Studio might make another thread. Cool Kiss story Ted

I used to go to the West L.A. Music show every year....it was like gearslut heaven for people that never attended a NAMM show. I got a demonstration of an EMU-Systems sampler....it was just me and John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame. We talked for a little while and he was very nice. Then later I asked the guy from EMU if he knew who that was and he said no. I named a few CCR songs and then he vaguely knew who it was.

When I started guitar lessons Kerry Livgren and Robbie Steinhart from the group Kansas both worked at the music store (Midwestern Music in Topeka, Kansas) and I used to talk to Robbie all the time. He had a great sense of humor and is a hell of a piano player(even though he is a violinist). The strange thing is that this was after they already had a major album release out. I guess the money hadn't rolled in yet. My guitar teacher one time started playing the song Dueling Banjos and Kerry Livgren heard it from one of the other teaching rooms, and they starting jamming on that tune and it was amazing. Just one of those things where you had to be there to appreciate it.

I drove Blues Sarciano and his manager to the airport about 10 years ago. He was very nice and we talked a lot about music. He seemed like just an average, down to earth guy.

I was in the Detroit Guitar Center about 2 years ago trying out this guitar, and this guy walks up and says "mind if I sit in?", I said sure. We jammed for about 5 minutes, just playing 1,4,5 bluesy stuff, just screwing around. I didn't think anything of it until the sales guy told me "dude, that was Kip Winger!, you just jammed with Kip Winger!". I had to think who he was for a minute, then it dawned on me.

I've met a number of "stars", but they're just people. I don't get the autograph thing; I'd much rather glean a bit of information (as I try to do here... ) than glom a signature that does nothing for me.

ON THE OTHER HAND,

I was talking about this to a friend about a week ago... There ARE a few names I'd probably stammer a bit around: any Beatle including George Martin; Jeff Beck; Gilmour; Brian May, Jimmy Page. Stewart Copeland would be interesting ("uh, hello Stewar, I mean, Mr. Copeland, Sir, uhm, I mean, uh... As the Ruler of All That is Cool About Drumming, does your crap smell? I mean, uhmmm) . Eddie VanHalen, Neil Peart, maybe. The rest - mere humans...?

There was a band that played in Detroit and Port Huron a lot in the 70s...can't remember the name of the band...but I think one of the guitar players was Chuck Miller, who now manages one of the Detroit music stores (I think Guitar Center, over by I-94). This info is just in case Hippie knows Chuck, which he may well, as Chuck had a few bands around town. At any rate, the bass player was a guy named Dave Kiswiney. Well, I was at this beach party up in Port Huron, and a bunch of guys were jamming, Kiswiney included. I got to sit in with them, using the absolute crappiest old Epiphone with bridge cables for strings. I couldn't play a thing on it, and probably more than not embarrassed myself.

Shortly after the jam it was announced that Kiswiney had been named Ted Nugent's bassist du jour. So I got to embarrass myself in front of Ted Nugent's bass player.

Well i`ve got tons of good ones so here`s a couple-Jimmy Page tryed to get my girlfriend to go back to his hotel room with him-when all she wanted to do was talk music with him[she was a singer].Luckly for me it was during the Coverdale -Page thing and he was all drunk and bloated or i might have been in trouble!Another one that still makes me laugh is my friend approaching Mike Patton after a Mr. Bungle show and telling him how good the show was for him but that he missed a few of his favorites to which Patton replied "why don`t you go home and suck your mama`s tittie"!Needless to say that expression has been adopted into our lingo ever since and used many times to great effect![although not to fans]......Arch

Hey, we post everything here kBw...

By the way, how many coats of Behr oil-based primer should I apply to bare wood before putting the regular coats of exterior latex semi-gloss?

Welcome, kBw...

Is it a good thing to latex over oil primer?

Point well taken, Chip...but I think that in this case it's okay. Either way, I'd do some serious checking.

I saw Chong at a layover in LA airport. My girlfriend didn't believe it was him... he saw us arguing about it and gave us a nod of the head. Cool thing was that he had two guitars strapped on his back and was in the line to go to Hawaii. Couldn't bring myself to trouble him for an autograph, but I wish I had a camera.

In the '80s, I managed the record store within the SEARS store in North Wales, PA. One of the store security guards was a guy named Dave Reilly. We had some great conversations about music, swapped tapes, and even traded some equipment. He is now part of "God Lives Underwater" (GLU)

I did a show in the mid 80's opening for a guy from Georgia name Mylon LeFevre. Well we were talking about how he had done some recording with Eric Clapton a few years earlier, and how if I ever met Clapton I should buy him a drink and he would sit around and talk all night. So I thought "Oh yeah, when am I ever gonna meet Eric Clapton "

Then about a month later Clapton was having a show in the area. I was driving through a deserted downtown, and I saw a guy walking down the street by himself - nobody else around - and I thought "That guy looks alot like Eric Clapton." So I turned around and looked again, and I decided that he looked enough like Clapton that I would chance making a fool of myself, and go up and talk to him. So I looked around the car for a pen and something to get an autograph on. The only thing I could find was a luggage tag from Laker Airways (remember them?). I had come back from England on them a few months earlier. Anyways, I got out of the car, and walked across the street to him, and asked him for an autograph. He signed with no problem, and while we waited at the light I told him I had done a show a few weeks earlier with an old buddy of his - Mylon LeFevre. So we talked a little about Mylon and a little about guitars, and how I had learned alot from his records. I walked him back over to his hotel, and wished him a good show that evening. I know I may have been able to spend more time with him, but I didn't want to seem like a groupie...

In a more recent celebrity spotting, I was out at the Staples Center for the Grammy Awards this last Feb (2001). During the break between the pre telecast awards and the telecast I saw Roger Nichols in line at McDonalds. I didn't say anything to him (the line was pretty intense), but I could imagine the commercial - (announcer) : "Roger Nichols - You won a Grammy Award for your most recent Steely Dan album. What do you want to do now? "
(Roger) : " I'm going to McDonalds!"

I played a club in the the Detroit area and Earl Klugh lived nearby and sat in with us on 2 occasions. I was on drums but was always a big fan.

Also I have a friend that went to see Eric Claption in Memphis and she called me up when she got back and told me she shagged him!!! I didn't believe her until she showed me all these pictures of her and Eric at a bar!

I'll throw my star story in - it was very nice. I was on an evening flight from Paris to Lisbon a couple of years ago - exhausted from what had been a grueling two week business trip - missing the family and home very badly.

I almost never strike up a conversation with strangers on an airplane, but I was seated next to this really nice lady and when we both realized we were Americans we just started chatting.

The conversation turned towards what we were each doing in Europe, and she told me she was there with People magazine doing some earth conservation thing. A little later I asked her if she was a writer, and she told me that she was a song writer, not a writer for People - so that turns the conversation towards music and we start sharing stories about songwriting, our home studios, the business, etc...etc... - - The long and short is we are having this amazing conversation - like two people who have known each other for years. About two hours into the flight I asked her if she had published any of her songs and she just gives me the biggest smile you have ever seen and says, "I hope you're not embarassed...." It was like the light switch had been turned on and I simply smiled back and said to her, "You're Carole King." She said, "Yeah, hi, nice to meet you."

Anyway, for two hours before I had any idea who she was she was one of the coolest people I ever met - - and it didn't change a bit after I knew who she was.

Cheers,

Amad

Speaking of running into people on an airplane...

About 3 years ago, I'm on an Air France flight from JFK to Paris to Marseille. I'm sitting next to a lady and strike up a conversation about music and the difficulties of keeping a relationship and being in a band. A couple of hours into the flight, I ask her what she does and she says that she plays keyboards. Then I ask her the band name. She replies, "Luscious Jackson". Turns out to be Vivian Trimble.

Couple of months later, she announces that she's leaving the band. She's quoted as saying something to the effect that when you start to recognize the same truck stops around the country from touring that's when you realize it's starting to get old...said the same thing to me on that flight...

I hear she's still writing, just not touring as much...

Oh yeah, probably the coolest thing to happen to me...our acoustic trio was playing a coffeehouse here in Westport. We'd invited some online acquaintences to sit in on breaks...a girl playing guitar and singing, and her boyfriend on bass. Well, the invited duo brought in their family, and they were really getting in to what we were doing. Just as a matter of our normal course, we played the Dylan song made famous by the Byrds "My Back Pages"...these folks really seemed to enjoy that one. Well, we took a break, and I sat down and introduced myself to the bass player of the other group's family, and mentioned that the young guy was sounding pretty good on bass. To which his Dad replied, "Well, music kinda runs in the family, I had a brother who played quite a bit". I said, "Does he play locally here" to which the guy replied "Actually, he passed away a few years ago. He was Gene Clark of the Byrds." Man, I damn near shit a brick. We'd had Gene Clark's family right there listening to us, and actually enjoying what we were doing!

Several months later, they were having sort of a sad family reunion, as the patriarch of the Clark clan had just passed away. We were doing a gig that night, and we had the whole Clark family, almost all of Gene's brothers, sisters, etc. (their family is quite large) out, and they all seemed to be digging on what we were doing. Truly a humbling experience, especially for a Byrds fan like me...

Speaking of which, they're still trying to organize a Gene Clark tribute festival here in the KC area. So far it hasn't happened yet. So if anyone has any ideas, let me know...

Hey Tedster I didn't know you were such a Byrds fan ???? Off the topic, I got to do a record with Chris Hillman about 10 yrs ago. It was the last Desert Rose Band album, I'm on the greatest hits also. It was really cool hangin' with him all Summer. That same year the Byrds got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. Got to record Al DiMeola once too. It was just for one of those floppy records that used to come in GTR Player Mag.

Good to know about the two coats of Primer before the top coat, I was about to do my deck. I was going to rent a pressure washer first, but found a skunk living in my unfinished basement so that's all on hold !!!! What do you think would be best to get rid of a Skunk a Marshall stack on 10 or a Soldano ????

I've got another cool one ... Last year one Sat AM I went to this popular place for breakfast and pulled into the parking lot the same time as Michael McDonald. I said hi and thanks for the music and stuff as we were walking in to put our name on a waiting list. There was an hour wait and after Michael got his name on the list he went back out to the car to make a phone call. When he came back he came back right to me and we continued our conversation for almost an hour. He was really nice and I left there with his cell phone #, business #, assistants name, e-mail and we've been staying in touch ever since. I think he's pretty swell.

Russ
