There's a lot of great ideas and wisdom I've been able to glean from the posts here... I don't respond to every post that's helped me in some way, but when I'm working on something, in the back of my mind I'll remember something someone on these forums said.
What's something you've gained from the forums lately which has either helped you or got your mental gears turning in a different direction?

I learn a million things from here and take with me a lot of inspiration for new stuff. I generally dont have trouble being creative, though, rather the reverse, my trouble is finding time (or strength) to finalize all the ideas... in reality I end up with 100x 10% pieces, 50x 50% pieces, 5x 90% pieces and 1x 101% piece of music.
Maybe some people (Hi Lee ) teach me to view things in a different light. Or not.
I also learn about the woes of most "traditional" studios and the (for me intriguing) workign methods. (I.e. the concept of "tracking" and "mixing" as two separate excercises is completely alien to my style of producing - they are both a huge one with "composing" for me).

Well, it's done what it's supposed to do in helping me to choose which gear to put in our studio.
I check the Forums everytime before I make a purchase.
The forums have helped me a lot when it comes to mixing...I'm not great at it yet but I at least have a better idea of what to look for.
The Keyboard Corner has just been tons of fun...a great community feeling...but mostly it's been nice to find keyboard players that I can respect...it's always been difficult to find them in the real world. Oh and so much inspiration from the music on the Keyboard compilation.
Mostly it's a nice way to kill time when I'm at work...a lot (not all) of what I do at work is very monotonous...bullshitting about things like "What's a Musician" really helps my day go by nicely.

Plain and simple...it makes me feel a part of something bigger than just my little studio. You guys and gals who are in NY, or LA, or Philly have chances to make connections that can jazz you up and motivate you to new levels. Whether its live music or new studio gigs. Out here in THE MIDDLE OF FUCKIN' NOWHERE (NW Wisconsin) its a bit harder to relate to people who just listen to music VS create it. I'm not saying I'm in a vacume, as a matter of fact ...i'm damn near the epicenter of music for 50 miles round here ....but its the big fish, small pond thing.
You all fill a need I have for feeling a bit more "connected" than I can get here.
And its damn amusing

Before I found this forum, I hadn't done much typing or writing since I graduated from college almost twenty years ago. At first I could barely put a sentence together and I know I still mispell words and have trouble with sentence structure. I'm in awe of people that can really write well.
Listening to peoples MP3s has motivated me to work hard on my own music. I've also come to the conclusion that I really like acoustic guitar and I wish people would play more acoustic instruments.

What have I gotten out of the forums lately? Let's see... how about... FREE STUFF!!!
Yesserie... Like free, excellent advise, free reign to spout my somewhat uneven blah blah blah, and actual REAL LIFE FREE STUFF!!!!
I recently posted about a piece of equipment I had aquired yet knew nothing about. One post gave me all the info I was looking for (for free), and one reply, from Lincoln of lrossmusic in D.C., went so far as to send me a copy of the user manual for the equipment...for FREE!!!
There is truly a different breed of people operating on these forums, and I feel that I have found something quite rare...and it don't cost nothin'!!!
How cool is THAT!!
Steve (feel free to give me anything you want to... )

In addition to the general advice and information people give online, I've gleaned some very valuable info regarding my own situation.
Thanks to Ted, Rosespappy, and several others for advice on going back on the road. It was great to have a sounding board of folks who understand the sacrifices and consequences of living a musical/mixing life. It certainly kept my perspective centered.
Thanks to Alphajerk, Mix Fix, Ted, Khan, D.Gauss, guitplayer, Curve, Sign, and many others for keeping me laughing. Humor recharges my batteries, physically & mentally.
Thanks to Lee Flier and others for walking right through my arguements and keeping me humble. I only THINK I know it all. (Actually, after hanging here a while, I realize I've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with my skills, passion, and the tools at my disposal.)
And WOW! Thanks everyone for the continuing education I receive, free of charge from the diverse knowledge and experience of all represented here.

Hi y'all...
the forums have been a great way of keeping in touch with the US and music culture from "out here"... It's great to be part of something as valuable as this...I wish I could have more hours to browse, respond and post, but between 3-4 forums on Musicplayer plus DA7.com plus Recording.org I really have my timeframe full!! Thank you to all the people who have responded to my inquiries, to all the moderators and to everyone who makes the effort of posting value added information.
Paul

I am a musician of modest proportions and plod along at my own little pace. This forum has helped me realize that I can always do better and that's exactly what I intend to do with my craft (until I give up or die). More importantly though, regardless of the topic here, there are always such rich offerings of genuine life knowledge and pure wisdom that help me realize that I can always do better as a person and I hope to keep improving in that respect (I would never give up on that one however...). Thanks.

1. Pointed me in a multitude of directions in understanding the recording process.
2. Turned me on to some very talented and interesting artists and their music.
3. Maybe most importantly, during a seemingly long period of my life where a seemingly mountain of health issues seem to warrant a daily dose of isolation (I'm not very people friendly these days) these forums manage to keep me from remaining totally isolated and a way to keep in touch with the possibility that someday I'll find a way to learn to cope with all the faces of my situation and learn to once again to enjoy human interaction, at least in respect to my pursuit of my art. In shorter words this place has been kinda of a "therapy".

These forums have been a great help for me, especiailly the learning, the different production techniques, equipment choices, camraderie, etc that many have already mentioned. One side effect I didn't realize was that I am now even more conscious of my work and techniques in the studio. I am giving more thought to things and when I find something "new" that works, I can't wait to add my little piece to the collective consciousness here on the boards...

That said...IMHO it's perfectly okay for a 15 year old who's just bought his first guitar to make "Korn Rules" posts. That's where he is. Granted, there are some 15 year olds who'll want to discuss Wes Montgomery, but, for the most part, it's stuff you and I would have posted when we were 15...(Who's better, Jimmy Page or Ritchie Blackmore?)...but we didn't have the net back then...so...I feel a joke thread coming on...

This forum is a wealth of knowledge, humor, insight, creativity and thought-provoking topics. I really enjoy every chance I get to browse. The most valuable gift I have received from it, however, is that of being brought out of my creative shell.
I have been working on music lately at a pace that I haven't kept since I was much younger. I have a burning desire to share my music with others - when I first joined, I was content to keep it all to myself. (Of course, once I have some works completed, I will submit them on the "Is your Music any good" thread and strap on the flame-retardant undies)
Thanks to all of you for reminding me what it is like to be part of a musical community once again.

This is the one I've been waiting for. Everyone uses some sort of software on their machine that they haven't paid. Maybe its a minor one or major one. It's almost like somebody's unmarried pregnant sister. Everyone knows she pregnant but everyone goes around pretending that her pregnancy doesn't exist. I DARE YOU TO START A THREAD ON THIS SUBJECT. i have found the "search" function totally invalubale. sometimes the results have nothing to do with what i was searching for yet were invaluable reading anyway.
honestly i get more info off these boards in terms of theory then i do from my 'prestigious' music university...
...and thats a little scary :P

What have the forums done for you lately?
I've been thinking about one thing in particular lately, that I get from lurking on all of the different boards, including the more tech-oriented EQ boards...
I get a much different perspective on the music business from discussions with engineers, than I normally would from associating with musicians or record executives.
Engineers tend to have a much more objective view in both directions. Their impressions are not clouded by the expectations and delusions of aspiring artists; nor are they tainted by the self-serving agendas of, say, A&R guys, or entertainment attorneys. Engineers (and I should add producers as well) are also not married to either the artist or the label after the job is done, so they can be much more candid in their views of both.
I've been getting a much better sense of the "big picture" from being on these forums, watching and reading closely - and sometimes reading between the lines of - the engineers and producers on these boards. That was just one kind of a subtle thing I realized I had been picking up here, and this in no way discounts everyone else's contribution, on the contrary.
