You know how it goes, a band like Zep puts out an album that just doesn't get the airplay of say their 4th album, but damn that Physical Grafitti sure sounds good to you. Other than that I'd nominate the Stones Black and Blue album, to me it's a damn good album that just didn't hit it at the right time. Genesis' album The Wind and the Wurthering to me was just awesome, yet you never hear it ANYWHERE. Duke was good too, and it was only a little better received. Edie Brickell's Ghost of a Dog to me was the best work she ever did, yet it only exists in the bargain bins, IF you can find it. Any of your faves out there?

Wind and Wuthering is one of my favorite 70's albums and it was one of my influences to start playing keyboards. The combination of Banks and Hackett was very potent at that point. Too bad it was the last one they did together. I don't like the sound of the remastered CD too well, and think something was definitely lost in the translation from vinyl.

I'd nominate Marvin Gaye's Here My Dear album.
It's a somber double album created as part of his divorce settlement and released at the height of disco, so naturally the public wasn't interested... It wasn't done as a throwaway album, but as a vehicle to exorcise Marvin's demons. The titles alone -- "You Can Leave But It's Going To Cost You", "When Did I Stop Loving You, When Did You Stop Loving Me", "Anna's Song" -- are hints as to how personal this album gets. (His ex wife, Anna, threatened to sue for invasion of privacy after the album was released.)
It's bizarre, self-pitying, ultra-personal, funky, sad, soulful, and beautiful. The two albums usually credited as Marvin's best, "What's Going On" and "Let's Get it On", are undeniably great, but "Here My Dear" is the one I never get tired of.

"Going for the One" by Yes got very little radio play and I think the reviews were pretty bad but it is one of my all time favorite rock albums.
Especially the last track "Awaken"

Geez, that happens to me all the time. Like my favorite Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album is "Long After Dark" and that's the one hardly anybody seems to pay any attention to. And my favorite Richard and Linda Thompson album is "Pour Down Like Silver" and people completely ignore that one - yeah it is kind of a bleak record but PERFECT for crying in your beer at 3 am.
At least I lucked out on the Rolling Stones. For some odd reason, my favorite Stones albums seem to be the same as "everybody's".

Just one that comes to my mind is "Gordon" from the Barenaked Ladies. A lot of us Yankees only know them from their big pop hits in the last three years or so, but a lot of their classic and best work was done in the late eighties/early 90's. Gordon is perhaps their foundational album, and many of their classics are on it.
Of course.....only for those that are Barenaked Ladies fans.

I saw that tour Yes did in support of that album, I think it was the first one since Rick Wakeman had rejoined the band. They were so damn good. I went out and bought a Melobar Screamer the following week.

Right before they had a smash with "Brothers in Arms", Dire Straits released "Love Over Gold", a prophetic title if there ever was one. With only five long songs nothing on it fit on the radio, and it dropped from sight. But, Hooooo! Play "Telegraph Road" with the volume cranked and the lights out, and you'll realize its probably their finest work, damn that track sings!!! The rest of the album is almost as good.
I also caught the tail end of a documentary on Chicago on VH-1, they've got a more experimental album in the can that their record company won't release because it has no signature "power ballads". Sure would like to have it.
P.S. Strat, is that the same Edie Brickell that fronted the "New Bohemians"? I miss that band!

this is very recent, but the smashing pumpkins got very little support for their last two albums, "adore" and "machina/the machines of God".
both are really wonderful, but i think adore, though it sold better, got ignored more because it was such a left turn from mellon collie. it's such a beatiful album, and it's unique in the pumpkins catalog, which is an impressive feat in itself. even though it has a lot of electronic elements to it, i think it's the most organic sounding pumpkins album.
it's the album that killed them commercially.

One in the same....and I TOTALLY agree about Love over Gold.....excellent music, also sports one of his best guitar solo's in a slow groove......the whole sound of the album is phenom.

Okay, Lee, I'll bite. Which IS your favorite Stones album? I know you're not going to say "Some Girls".
While it wasn't exactly ignored, I'll cast a vote for Dire Straits "Making Movies". Of course the most expendable tune was the single, and it got airplay to the exclusion of the rest. Just luv the sounds and the songs.

Botch,
Yes, it's that Edie Brickell. If you're a fan, keep your eyes and ears open. I expect something.

A few that come to mind:
- Any of the first 4 Peter Gabriel solo albums, particularly the first two. All great records, "#3" and "Security" each had a hit with "Games w/o Frontiers" and "Shock the Monkey", but none were nearly as commercially successful as "So" and "Us". - Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints". Nothing could possibly match the popularity of "Graceland", but this was a strong collection of songs matched with muscular Brazilian/South American beats. - Sting's "The Soul Cages". Deeply personal, drawn from the death of his father. - Everything Bruce Hornsby has recorded since "The Way It Is". "Harbor Lights" and "Hot House" show off his strong chops.
Speaking of "Going for the One", what a great Yes album! The title track, "Awaken", "Turn of the Century", even the single "Wonderous Stories" are among my favorite Yes songs. Where the hell did they go wrong after that with "Tormato"?
As for the previously mentioned Barenaked Ladies, I saw them a few weeks ago and can't remember the last time I was so impressed by a band's live performance!

Yeah I saw Barenaked Ladies last year on TV when they played FarmAid.....those guys are a riot. Gotta see em live. Peter Gabriel......I agree, Security is one the best albums of that decade.....rhythmically intense, and with all the space synth drones and arpeggiated synth riffs.....really cool. My son bought me Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints, it's a fave. But I'm kinda older, and Mother and Child Reunion is still what I hear and feel when I think Paul Simon. I do love his work with all the South African musicians......really cool.

Some excellent albums here already...
One of my favourites is Blind Melon's "Soup."
This is a kickass piece of work, that was dropped from the shelves, almost treated like a posthumous waste.
If you come across a copy, have a listen. It is excellent.
Cheers
Rick

1.The group called "801", a live record released in '76. The band consisted of Eno, Phil Manzenera, John Wetton, etc. (a good lot from the Roxy Music camp). Just a terrific album that has held up well over the years. Plus, there is a cover version of "Tomorrow never Knows" that Eno sings & plays on that is bizarre even for today's standards. 2. Neil Young's "Tonights the Night". Sloppy as shit, Neil's totally wasted throughout, but full of heart & soul.

Speakin' of The Stones "Black & Blue", that record is recorded impeccably! Give a listen to the fidelity on "Hand of Fate", for instance, or the guitar on "Hot Stuff". I wish I could record like that.

Funny but the first album that comes to mind is Yes' "TORMATO". Awesome musicianship, great songs, engaging production.
Also, Level 42's "World Machine" is a groovin' masterpice.
Rush's "Presto" could be one of the greatest rock albums of all time but who would know that?!
Elo's "Zoom" is next to end up in the discount bin, but what a great CD!
cheers, Dean
