ive recently purchased an S2000 with 10 megs ram
i was wondering what luck other S2000 users/owners have had with adding extra RAM, as i hear not all 72pin edo ram works in it, likewise some scsi cd drives apparently dont work with it
also the akia site has a bad link for pc MESA software
anyone know where to download it on the net, or if there is other software for pc that works with it?
any other tips, likes, dislikes, experiences using it live (which i will be doing), things of that nature??
by the way, i dont have the fx or expansion board, but 10 megs of ram.

Don'tknow about the RAM, got mine the expensive way, at the store I bought the sampler from. But I would certainly try those old Mac 72pin ram modules, they must be so dirt cheap now. Gotta have 32.
I'm using a Yamaha 4x CDRW internal drive with it - I bought an external case for it. It didn't really work that well until I downloaded new firmware for the drive from the yamaha site.
My tip would be...forget about MESA. It'll just give you headaches. And I have a 640mb Fujitsu Magneto-Optical that works great with it, although I you cannot use 640 mo cartridges, only the smaller ones. I bought a bunch of 230mb ones real cheap on the internet. I'm sooo happy because I really hate Zip drives and disks, makes me nervous. But the MO's are rock solid.

I've got 32megs in mine. I've tried different configurations of SIMMS, from different manufacturers. I've never had a RAM problem at all. MESA however is nothing but a pain in the ass. The only reliable thing about it is that you know everytime you use it, it will fuck up. For a SCSI drive, ZIP (100 or 250) will work fine. I used to use a zip100. Andrew

thanks for the reply
why is MESA so bad? are there any other alternatives? id like to edit on my pc. how is Recycle used with a sampler?
also i didnt even realise you could connect a Zip drive. i like the thought of that though.
so far i have been nothing but pleased with this unit. i chalked up a nice little javascript calcutor for the timestretches and bpm algorithmic nightmares, but everything on it seems pretty logical. i know this day and age people hate scrolling through pages of layered menus, but it becomes second nature after a while i guess.
thanks for the replies by the way. keep smiling, DRi-

MESA crashes my Mac a lot. It doesn't save programs well either. If you are using loops, you would be wise to look at Recycle. Recycle is one of the best pieces of software you can buy for your sampler. I can't recommend it enough. You will never worry about loop lengths, stretching, tempo matching etc. again. When I bought Recycle, I really moved up to the next level with integrating loops into my sequences. Before I had it, working with loops was a nightmare. When you load a loop into Recycle, it will slice up the individual beats, send them to your sampler as a program, with each beat mapped to a different key. It will also create a MIDI file of that loop. You just import the MIDI file to your sequencer, then assign the program in your sampler to that MIDI channel. I have never had a problem using it with my S2000.

that sounds fantastic
i also own Reason so no doubt recycle would be a great addition.
i think for the sake of learning the sampler in and out i will get used to setting loops and timing issues onboard before i use recycle and other simpler solutions
i always worry that i dont master my gear enough. nothing is sadder then a musician with gear they dont totally rule on.

I'm using Reason as well and it's the perfect companion to Recycle. Moving files from recycle into the rex player is easy.
I agree that we should all try to "master our gear" It's so easy to just learn a few necessary tasks on any given piece of gear, then move on to the next. I was that way with DP2.7. Now that I have DP3, I'm making an effort to go through the manual (every damn page) It's paying off though. I already know volumes more about DP3 than I did about DP2.7.
Good luck.
