Just trying to decide whether or not I want to continue working with a new client. A really good friend referred someone to me for archiving an old project and bringing it to CD for the first time. I've done two sessions with this guy (who comes in from out of town) and every time he leaves a day or two later I notice something missing in my Studio. Nothing very valuable ... but sentimental stuff I can't replace !@#$%^& I've not confronted him over this most recent session, but just trying to decide whether I want to even finish the project. I'm sure there are a few others out there that have been through this before. UUUUGGGGHHH

I do not have a studio but i wanted to comment. This is bizarre. I would do one of two things - put everything away in your house and keep this guy confined to the studio if the money is that important to you. Or, ask him if he might have mistakenly "moved" one of your items, if you don't care about this job.

What a sleezbag! Unless you need the money desparately, you might tell the guy you've gotten "real busy" with another project and can't continue with him. MAIL him everything you've done so far and get him far away from you.

If he's really that far gone that he has to steal momentos, he could get REAL "insulted" if you accuse him (or even hint at it) of theft.

If this happened to me, I would certainly have confronted him the first time I noticed it (not after several times). I like the "have you moved such-and-such" idea, but if it's happened several times now, it may be a bit late to handle smoothly.

I'd dump him in a millisecond. I don't have time to babysit kleptos.

You could always install a video surveillance camera and find out exactly what's going on.

I'd put something out as bait. Something irresistable, based on your previous missing items. Then get your brothers Guido and Vito confront the jerk when the stuff turns up missing.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I don't know what I'm going to do just yet, luckily I've got some time to think about it. If I continue the project he's going to walk into a room that squeeks it'll be so clean and the bait will be glued down !!!! I'll just give up going to the bathroom.

It'll probably screw up your recording environment but I'd buy me one of those electrical fence generators that make periodic 10,000 volt shocks and wire to the bait.

Anyone who steals is SCUM. I wouldn't have them over again.

Their was a classic Seinfeld episode about this very same thing. Jerry suspected a guy who cleaned his apartment of stealing a statue that belonged to George (which was a whole other story). It ended with Kramer going to the guy's apartment, impersonating a police detective, and "stealing" the statue back. Would doing something like that be out of the question?

Before you confront this guy, be sure that you have nailed him red-handed, or have indisputable evidence. 'Cuz if he's really a clepto, he's probably good at weasling out of these circumstances.
