OK, lets say i need to do live gigs every weekend. dont want to lug tons of gear. i want to use a laptop with Echo lalya or RME multiface. (kinda overkill for this but) use my Evolution mk361C keyboard a mic for me and a mic for another vocalist. i want to use some soft syth thru the laptop, and due to worring over the power of the laptop, have a mixer that has FXs on it for the mics. plus i want to be able to have sound even if the computer crashes. and say my budget is $4000 or less. i need to buy laptop, Echo/RME and mixer or outboard FX.
would you recommend Event EZ bus/ Behringer 1662FX Pro or... what. getting Lexicon or Presonus outboard gear would put me over budget and more gear to haul. how well would RT Player and a Mir help with the presets. please no Behringer politics debate
thanks Scott

( Please Don't tell me spammer )
I manage my own live presentations of my acoustic duet with the following configuration:
* MAC G4 LapTop * USB Quattro Audio Interface (4 in/ 4 Out + MIDI). Activate the 4 in and 4 outs config. * USB DUO (as a Mic Preamps). Direct Outputs are sent to the Quattro 1&2 channels. * Radium USB MIDI Controller * PropellerHead's Reason * Ableton's LIVE
1) I do open LIVE. After that, Open REASON.
2) Channels 1 & 2 are Microphones coming from the QUATTRO. I do assign LIVE's FX to them (Chorus, Compression and EQ):
3) Channels 3 & 4 are for guitars, which are connected direct to the QUATTRO's 3&4 Channels. Add FX as desired to each channel.
4) Channel 5 is a STEREO ReWired channel coming from a REASON's main mixer. I do use reason with a prepared rack with Samplers (pianos), Synths (FX and Pads) and Rhythm devices. SOmetimes sequences, sometimes playing live.
5) Add Delay and Reverb to LIVE's SEND 1 Bus in order it will have those FX available when sending audio to it. SEND 1 is Extra FX, main bus. FX can be sent too to monitors.
6) SEND 2 is MONITOR 1. Assign its output to QUATTRO's Out 3. SEND 2 is then MONITOR 1.
7) Create a SEND TRACK. It's gonna be SEND 3. Assign its output to QUATTRO's OUT 4. SEND 3 is then MONITOR 2.
It's gonna look something like this:
8) Assign RADIUM's MIDI FADERS 1 to 5 to control channels 1 to 5 Volumes, Fader 6 SEND 1 Master level, Fader 7 for controlling MONITOR 1 and Fader 8 for MONITOR 2. RADIUM's master fader controls master volume of LIVE. If want some extra control, assign some of the knobs to control AUX SENDS levels for each channel.
After this, you'll have a 2 mics, 2 "real" instruments plus one -or more- virtual instrument setup, with Live FX, TWO monitors and a MIDI controller which does a double funtion as a Surface control and KEYBOARD.
Everything will have a weight of less than 20 pounds and will fit in any car trunk... and budget.
Get something similar from any other manufacturer, but I guess you got some fresh ideas for your setup.

Originally posted by jcskid: how hard is that hitting your laptop? im afraid of it being to much, My MAC Titanium (512MB in RAM, 6xx MHz) does not suffer a bit according to its CPU meters. Try to NOT use HUGE REASON setups (I mean, do not open too many instances of each instrument), just to be in the safer side. I prefer OS X (Jaguar) for stability but I get smaller latencies (delay in the pass of the audio signal) on OS 9.2.
Get the baddest machine, CPU, hard disk and the biggest amount of RAM you can get... then you'll be safer.
It works pretty fine on PCs too, but MY gig machine is a MAC.
Originally posted by jcskid: has it crashed on you? Never... Before getting the MAC, I used to work on a rack-mounted PC and it never crashed either !. You must know your computer's limitations in the studio prior to getting it going live.
Originally posted by jcskid: cool how you did it with all M-audio gear... hadnt thought about "live", Reason was one i was going to use. Of course, I use LIVE because it's my company's software. However, I love it. Very useful, powerful and CPU-Friendly. Using it as a live mixer is an amazing amenity.
REASON by itself will not allow you to get live audio and add digital FX. To have your computer acting as a mixer, you'll need LIVE, CUBASE, DIGITAL PERFORMER or LOGIC, applications which allow you to get real-time audio and apply FX. Not sure if ProTools LE would let you to do this.
Originally posted by jcskid: have you tossed ArKaos into the mix?? Now, that would really be TOO MUCH for a single machine, running ArKaos VJ, REASON and LIVE together... never tried, but I am pretty sure it will be too much pushing it to the bounds and a sure receipt for a live crash situation.

thanks scott Nope
Even while I was lucky enough to be demoing the software at the 2003 Winter NAMM's booth (hey, I actually demoed LIVE for Jordan Ruddes, keyboardist of Dream Theater!), since I am in charge of the Latin American branch of business I am not really supposed to attend USA Conventions.
Saludos

This post almost exactly addresses some questions that I have regarding my live rig. I have been using a 500Mhz PowerBook G4 running HALion with a simple VSTiHost app. It gave me a taste of life without heavy gear, but it wasn't quite what I needed. I need at least 2 controllers and the ability to oute to at least 3 outputs--4 ideally).
I very recently upgraded to a 1.67Mhz PowerBook G4 with 2GB RAM. I have 2 USB midi controllers and a Presonus FireBox (6 outputs) and am tryig to find the best VST host that allows up to 4 outputs (I perform large Reggae Festivals with our own soundman who needs the piano separate for those big delays and reverb hits). Stereo outs isn't enough.
I've been intrigued by the idea of using Live with HALion (I've converted 20 years worth of Ensoniq samples to HALion and can't do without them) and other VST instruments, but I've found Cubase and Nuendo very easy to use--I use the PC version on my home studio rig. The demo version of Live that came with my m-audio keystation is very non-intuitive for me--much like Korg sequencers compared with Ensoniq--equally good but different layouts and language. I've also been creatively bogged by Reason (feels like I have to learn a room full of gear to make any sound). Anyway, does anyone have experience using cubase or nuendo as a VST host for stage? Is it as stable as Abelton Live (from what I hear--that's the bomb). It's just that I'm very comfortable with Steinberg and very uncomfortable with most other platforms. Is it worth relearning Live or am I good with Steinberg on stage?
Thanks in advance...Joe
