I've mentioned before that I loan equipment to the bass player across the street. Two times back, he said he wanted to buy his own rig. I'm sure I offered to help. Of course he didn't, which is why we had another loan. This time he said that he'd buy his own rig, and I told him that he can't do that without letting me help. I told him it's just too much fun to join in the excitement of some new gear. So we began getting to more details. His name is Rob.

Rob plays a franken-p bass (neck feels great). He is usually playing rock trio (drums/guitar/bass), but sometimes they add keys or another guitar. It's always small bars or backyard stuff. He's old-school (in his early 50s) and likes a more old school sound. When Rob uses my rig - iAmp 500 / two Berg 12 cabs (one with, one without horn) he leaves it pretty flat with one contour button pushed (slight scoop, nothing much) and says he likes it. His most often-stated feature of my rig that he likes is the head and cab size/weight. \:\)

Rob doesn't want to spend much money, and I told him to figure on $350 for a head and $350 for a cab - both used. I figure he can manage with a 2x10 and a reasonable head. He doesn't have budget for anything fancy, and that's fine because he's not a "fancy" guy. \:\) I was hoping to find him something used, but new if possible. I've been scanning some classified boards at times, though I've avoided ebay. My own feeling was that a recognized gear mover (or gear slut) on Talkbass would be less of a risk than someone on ebay.

Last Wednesday I had some time and was looking for some accessories, and stopped at a store I'd never visited (All Music, Plainview NY). They had some interesting basses (Zon double-cut Elite 4 that was very nice), but what caught my attention was an Acme Low B1. I played it and I'm not sure it's loud enough on it's own for Rob, but what a great sounding cab. I asked what they wanted, and they told me they are $700 new, so they want $350. I knew that was wrong, but it wasn't until I was home that I saw the B1 is $400 on Andy's site. I haven't been back yet, but I'd offer 200 and take it for 250. I put that aside in my mind for Rob - it's the right size cab. If it's not loud enough, he can borrow one of my Bergs to go along with it.

Two days later, I found some more time in between two appointments. Went to Guitar Center in Commack just to walk around for a while. They had some used GK heads, and I thought right away that a GK would work well for Rob (I think a Hartke 3500 would be good as well). They had an 800 that seemed overpriced, and a 700 that seemed overpriced. Then I saw another 700 in a wooden/carpeted rack case. It was scratched up, but it was $279. I got a sales-kid to set me up with a $199 GK 2x10 to see how it sounded. It sounded excellent. \:D I called Rob, but he didn't answer. I called 57pbass to make sure I wasn't hallucinating about this being a good deal. The sales-kid told me that for about $20 they'd do a 12-month performance guarantee (warranty), and that I could return the thing for 30 days no question/full refund. The more I thought about it, if Rob didn't want it, it would work as a backup for me.

So I bought it.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) it is on "police hold" until July 4. This is done when GC buys used equip (presumably when the seller doesn't have original documentation) to wait a period of time in case it was stolen.

Last night I sat with Rob and explained that he bought an amp. Turns out that after our last conversation, his Minister Of Finance told him he should go out and buy what he needs (within reason). We both agreed that $300 isn't an amount that causes any notice, but if he has it for 10 years he'll feel like it was a fantastic deal. So he's in. \:\)

We talked cabs, and I couldn't find the GK 2x10 on-line that I had played. I think we'll go together next Monday to pick up the head and try some cabs (they had a Peavey 2x10 for $249). Then I'll drag his ass to hear the B1.

We also spent some time in my basement listening to my cabs. Rob asked what difference a cab makes, and so we played bass-taster with my two Bergs and my Kustom 2x12. He came to understand how cabs have different sounds. He also loved the Kustom more than the Bergs, but he understands that the Berg's better "definition" will help in a room with a band, and that the Kustom can get woofy in a big room (trust me on this). I love when I plug everything in (Kustom + 2 Bergs) - lots of volume (2 ohm load!) and cool sounds - at least in my basement.

We'll see how this progresses....

Tom

I've played Rob's franken-p. I like it. It's pretty sweet.

Good for you, Thomas. Way to spend other people's money.

Peace.

You are a great man Mr C. Kind of like a bass Yoda - but obviously not small and green! Great job. When I needed my new rig - it was Alex on this forum (along with a few others) who helped me out with the entire direction and purchase and I'm very grateful.

I wish I'd got my rig for that price though!

You're a stand up guy Mr Tom!

I wish I had someone to spend my money.....no no.....wait a minute, I spend it all just fine all by myself.

Seriously though, great for your neighbour to have someone to help out like this!

The credit goes to Rob for putting up with me. Hell - I'm just using other people to buy gear!

Willie - I forgot that you were over one day when Rob was around!

Last night, Rob and I (and his bass) showed up at GC to claim the GK 700. While the saleskid was digging it up, we messed around with other stuff. I made Rob play through the MarkBass combo with 2 6" speakers (that is just stupid light), and the expression on his face when he hit a low E was very funny.

The GK 2x10 that had been there last week was gone, with a 4x10 in it's place. yuck. A different sales guy said he had another 2x10 and brought it out. Yeah.

We plugged in the GK700 and tried various available cabs in the room:
  • Peavey 2x10 - too "middy"
  • Trace Elliot 2x10 - too middy, but not as bad
  • Trace Elliot 1x15 - not bad. We coupled it with the 2x10 and it was still pretty good.
  • EA 1x10 (it was there, it was used) - very strong mids, not Rob's tone.
  • Ampeg classic 1x15 - low end was too woofy
  • Ampeg classic 4x10 - better, but still woofy on the low E
  • Ampeg classic 8x10 (what the heck) - nice, but we didn't play it too long
  • GK 2x10 - rattling in the speakers - very bad. I pulled a Backline 2x10 combo over and used those speakers - no rattling, but also not a great sound.

At the end, we just went with the head. Rob's bass puts out lots of interesting stuff on a low E, and almost every cab had a kind of distortion/woof on that note. There was some rattling in the room, but something wasn't right.

I'm starting to suspect that Rob will either have to go with a bigger cab or a more expensive cab. Unfortunately they didn't have the MarkBass 2x10 (4x10 and 1x15 were there, but it wasn't as easy to hook up). So we'll keep looking and learning.

We tried the MarkBass with the tube in the preamp (not the full tube power amp model) into a MB 8x10. Oh yeah - that sounded pretty damn sensational.

In the midst of all of this there was a guy trying out practice amps with his own short scale Hamer Slammer - it had two soaps, and he played over the neck with a very upright-like tone. The GK Backline 2x10 sounded very nice. It turns out they are $449 now, but had been $299 during a recent all-night sale. For $299, it's a steal. We chatted with the guy quite a bit and tried to help him out. What I thought would be best was the Peavey combo with the 12, but it wasn't working. Interestingly they had no Line 6 combos.

Next step is to try the GK700 with my Bergs and my Kustom 2x12. We couldn't do it last night because it was after 9 and we hadn't eaten (so we stopped at a Mexican place).
Rob has a gig this Friday, so the new amp gets a workout straight away.

This could go on for some time.

It's a great journey and journal though.

Yes - it might take a while to find the right cabinet(s), or to save up the right amount of money. My only issue is that I keep him from Behringer (there was a thread years back showing one of our guy's 4x10 with two blown cones when the thing was brand new).

I'll let you know what cabs Rob takes on his gig Friday and what he says. I'm debating taking the GK700 to my Stonefly gig and giving the iAmp 500 the night off (though it will come with me just in case).

Sometimes a tone quest is the most difficult...

Sounds like you guys are having fun, Tom.

I spend other people's money all the time, mostly my wife's. For some reason, I stopped having money when I got married...

I stopped at the Groove Shoppe to hear a Demeter 3x10. Sounded clear and quite nice - a quality cab. \:\) At about 65 pounds, it's a bit heavy but it has well-placed handles. It was priced pretty well, but still may be too steep. Rob may have to deal with the fact that what he wants are Bergs.

I took the GK 700 to the Stonefly gig on Saturday. It's not as powerful as the EA, and I was running it at 3/4 on the power amp control, and 3/4 on the boost. It sounded great, and there were no problems at all. I thought it sounded better with the BenLoy than with the Kinal, but I didn't change any tone controls on the amp when I switched basses. I probably needed to make some small adjustments, but it was still nice and strong. If Stonefly was my only gig, I could have bought a GK1001 and been happy, but I need the tone sculpting of the EA in the various churches that I play. Rob was happy to hear that I played the amp the entire night (not just a set).

Now if we can just find cabs at some point...

Tom
