Question about plugging a keyboard into a mixer: I was playing weekly at a shop/pub and plugging into a huge powered mixer and sound system they had, they way I did it was plugging into 2 different line inputs and panning them left and right accordingly... so my question is this: Does that produce a different result than plugging into the stereo line in (since it had those as well, but since the CD player was plugged into it I never used it). I imagine that it would, but lately after reading some old posts I'm thinking there might be mono summing involved? It's all really confusing at this point.

If you are plugging the stereo outputs of your keyboard into two line inputs - and pan one fully left & the other fully right - you should get the same results as plugging into the stereo line-in.

Plus, you may benefit from the EQ controls on these inputs that the CD input probably doesn't include.

Depending on how the FOH speakers are placed in the room, you may want to try panning each input closer to the middle to hear if that sounds better.

Experimentation is key to getting the best sound.

Good luck.

Right, though I'd stick with hard-panning, in general, for keyboard sounds. The exception to this is that some pianos pan the keys across the keyboard, and do it to such a great extent that panning towards center might be required for everyone to hear all the notes you're playing. Most pianos don't pan them that much, though.

But Tom is dead right that the best bet is to listen and see. Find another player or use a sequencer to listen from the audience, for any venue where you play frequently, or whenever you have the time before a gig (and FOH isn't too busy with other things ... good luck with that).

Yeah, nevermind. I was thinking of how I use a stereo Y adapter to get sound into my laptop. Carry on.
