I play finger style and rarely use a pick since I am not too good at it yet.
I have noticed that I am getting a small lump on the back of my right hand that lines up with the tendons that move when I use my index and middle finger to play.
I have been playing a lot lately and think this may be the cause.
It does not affect my playing but I have a hard time gripping things and noticed it when I tried to use wire cutters the other day I needed both hands.
I think it is tendonitis. Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem?

Yes, I have had many bouts with it. If it is tendonitis, the only cure I know of, is resting the tendons,(stop Playing or change your style for a time). Ibuprofen is the most widely used medicene. It reduces the pain and the inflamation. If the lump does not go down in a few days with rest, you need to see a doctor. Rocky

It's a ganglion cyst and they form over joints that have had a lot of stress. It is actually a small tumor and you will need to have it removed surgically or with ultrasound therapy. Go Read This

I've had a similar 'knot' on the inside of my wrist, on the thumb side. It pops up once in awhile for a week or so, and then goes away as quickly as it comes on. It has never hurt or debilitated me as far as I can remember. I haven't seen the need to see a doctor about my problem, but maybe you should if it affects your motor ability. Good luck.

The bassist from Dillinger Escape Plan mentioned hand specific yoga stretches. Sounds good to me, sometimes I'll cramp up and won't be able to stretch the fingers as far as I usually do.

I'm with Cassius. I'm not a doc nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express. Go see a doc. Best of luck!

I'm not a doc nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express. LoL!
I got a knot on the right hand once, but I think it had more to do with falling down playing paint ball. If you are worried enough that you are thinking of going to the docs', then you probably owe it to yourself to do that.

I think it is tendonitis. Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem? It could be tendinitis, a ganglion cyst, or both. I've had both, especially in the right wrist, for years now. The cyst has been drained twice, hopefully I will not need to go a third time. The last I knew, the third time they have to go in and cut it out. The thought of someone cutting around tendons is more than a little scary. Go see a doctor and rest that wrist for a while. Ask plenty of questions, especially the best position for the wrist to experience the least amount of stress. There are some threads here on the subject of good form to check out that will help also. Good luck!

I've had a cyst on my right wrist for the past 15 years or so. I've had it aspirated 2 times and it's always come back. It doesn't hurt unless something hits it, or if I hyper extend my wrist backward. I last had it aspirated in 2000, and just decided to live with it when it came back.. I'm a little too paranoid to let someone go poking around in there again as if they damage a nerve or tendon it could damage my ability to play.
you can see it in this picture,on my right wrist.

sh*t! Now you guys have me worried! I've had one for a few months, maybe more (that I've noticed anyways). It's not big, maybe the size of pea... never knew what it was. It's never hurt or anything, it's just sort of there. Now I'm freaking out! Mine is slightly behind the wrist, maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch into the top of the forearm. Could that be the same thing, or am I a mutant growing something else?

this may be a condition called "ganglia" I've always heard of it happening in the wrist but it might happen where you speak. It's just a gathering, bunch of leisons that grow around the nerves producing pressue ie/pain. I think the best thing would be to stop playing for a few days to rest it and then change your practicing tecnique - a bassist who gives lessons might be able to help you out with this. all else fails go to a doctor.

My ex-wife had one of those cysts and had it smashed out the first time (no, I'm not joking), it came back so they drained it, then it came back again and they removed it...it was no big deal and she recovered quickly.

That's two votes for mutant... not that I needed to be reassured of my mutant grotesqueness, but thought I'd throw it out there

Sorry to hear of your troubles. IMO, you need to relax your hand(s). Definitely see a professional, someone who can offer you actual medical assistance. Follow their instructions.
From there, try to play with a more relaxed mindset, and a more relaxed handset. Believe it or not, I find that holding my hands under warm (not hot) running water for some time before playing really helps. (If you have a signigicant other, do the dishes and be a star for them ) It really helps.
I have been playing for... well, let's just say it's been a really long, long time. And I have had no medical issues related to playing bass.
Good luck to you.
Peace,
wraub
