Now that the Motif XS Rack is shipping, I'm thinking of lightening my gigging load by getting rid of the S80 (55lbs), and going for an XS and a lighter weighted action, either a 76 or 88 key controller.
Any suggestions?

Fatar Studiologic VMK188plus, if you want graded hammer action. For balanced hammer action, if you don't care about aftertouch, the new Yammie KX8 controller might fir the bill, but I don't think they're quite out yet (maybe next month).

The CME stuff has good feel, but as you know, some of us had problems with on-stage instability (MIDI lockup, etc.), whilst others have had smooth sailing with both the UF and VX lines.

Not much else out there in terms of new vs. used, as the M-Audio stuff isn't serious gear but just for those who need 88 keys and have little to no actual playing experience.

The VMK188plus is lighter (in weight) than the KX8, I think, but the listed weights are sometimes hard to go by as they aren't always consistent in whether they include the power supply.

Of course you're probably aware that both CME and Fatar Studiologic make weighted controllers at several size points, including 61/63 keys and 73/76 keys (I forget the exact number of keys in each range, as it isn't consistent from manufacturer to manufacturer).

If you go for a shorter keyboard vs. a full 88-key board, be VERY aware that the manufacturers make extremely different choices about which notes to chop off! This can limit your effective playing range, if the keyboard starts mid-octave and ends mid-octave.

The Yamaha kx8 may be the ticket, just be aware that yammy has several levels of graded hammer action. This is the entry level, not the same as the motif, the kx8 has the same action as the p85 which you can find in some music shops now to check it out. And it may be perfect for you. However, I much perfer the studiologic. The action is superb.
