Got the idea from the 'guilty pleasures' thread, but since we regularly - and mostly justifiably - rail at contemporary pop music, I was just curious as to any particular pleasures from the 'vast ocean' of recent pop ... er ... classics.
I really connect with John Mayer's GRAVITY ; when I first heard it, I was blown away. It's really simple but I find it measures up both lyrically and musically. I usually like my guitar understated and rhythmic but this cat's melodic imagination when soloing/improvising is rich, and I can listen to him solo with no problem at all.

I second Mayer. One of my favorites is the Abbey Road live performance of "Vultures" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbeNbBYr1u0 - the music starts at about 1:10). Some really really tasty vocal harmonies and B3 stuff. The little "wurly" solo is good as well even if it's not the real thing.

Gary Moore's "I Had A Dream". Really soulful. His use of space between the notes is a brilliant. I Had A Dream

I really like David Gray's "Please Forgive Me" and "Babylon" off his White Ladder album. I play "Please Forgive Me" several times a week. One of my favorites to play.

I think the entire John Mayer 'Continuum' is amazing from top to bottom....I saw him last summer (the wife made me go), but in the end I was floored, it was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time..
a few others: Beck - Sea Change Hiromi - Time Control Steve Winwood - Nine Lives Feist - The Reminder Joe Jackson - Rain Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence,Patience and Grace Joe Strummer - Global A Go-Go Snow Patrol - Eyes Open
jazz- Tord Gustavson - Being There The Necks - Athenaeum, Homebush, Quay & Raab Steve Kuhn - Love Walked In Cinematic Orchesstra - Man With a Movie Camera

off the top of my head....
Winwood "About Time" Porcupine Tree "Absentia" (the first half) Joan Osborne "Relish" (Mark Egan is brilliant on this!) String Cheese Incident "On The Road, East Troy Wisconsin, 7.12.02" (great live album from Alpine Valley, my first exposure to the band)

Good thread. Several international artists come to mind first:
Jorge Drexler - Eco (talented singer/songwrter from Uruguay. Frontera is also a nice CD)
Sara Tavares - Balance (Portugal and Cape Verde islands in her background. . .pan-latin musical styles.)
Corrine Bailey Rae - Corrine Bailey Rae (UK singer; my favorite mainstream pop record of the past few years.)
Also:
Roseanne Cash - Black Cadillac (very strong songs, likely her best recording ever)
Richard Bona - Tiki (extraordinary bassist. . .some of his tunes are sketchy but this disc is loaded with great music)
Raul Midon - State of Mind or World Within a World (He needs to shed some of his Stevie Wonder vocal-isms, but an extremely talented pop/r&b singer and guitarist.)
CDs in heavy rotation at home that feature great keyboard work include Mulatos by Omar Sosa and several by Fred Hersch.

Agreed! This is one of the few things from the past decade I like. In defense of the many artists who composed during this period, I was exposed to mostly mainstream music and found almost all of it, stale, generic and trite. I find myself going back and listening to older music in other genres. As an example, I've been listening to older cuban music, older jazz and older new age and discovering some great music in the process.

Most of the stuff I like from the past decade is not mainstream.
Toto - Falling in Between Aerosmith - Honkin on Bobo Dumpstaphunk - Listen Hear John Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen - Pin Your Spin Chicago - Stone of Sisyphus (I know it's not FROM this decade, but it was just released) Eric clapton & J. J. Cale - The Road to Escondido Neville Brothers - Walking in the Shadow of Life New Orleans Social Club - Sing Me Back Home
That's just the short list of things currently on my iPod.
