Last week I ordered a StudioLogic SL-990XP Midi Controller from GuitarCenter.com - a blemished one for $297, marked down from $349. The only reason I ordered it from GC is that a drummer I've played with a few times is a manager at our local GC and told me that I could return it to the store if I didn't like it rather than having to pay to ship it back to their Kansas warehouse. (Since the website says expressly that returns cannot be made at the stores and must be shipped back, I emailed to confirm and was told that it's up to the individual store managers whether they wanted to take responsibility for GC.com returns.)
The board arrived yesterday and I still don't know if I like it - it didn't work. It powered up, but nothing I did would coax it to transmit any midi data at all. I called GC, got a return authorization, and this morning returned the board to GC in Toledo. They took it out of the box, tested it, and said they'd ship it back to Kansas today. Cool.
Got home and called GC about a replacement. No more blems in stock. Maybe more coming July 9th, maybe not. They did have new ones in stock, though. Well, sez I, can you give me a little break on the price since I received a non-working board? Maybe split the difference? "Mary" puts me on hold to talk it over with her supervisor. Comes back on: they'll do one better - they'll send a brand spankin' new one to replace it at no extra cost. Extra cool.
Thanks Guitar Center!

Having spent many years in music retail, I think they did exactly what they should have done. For starters, what idiot put it in & box & shipped it out without checking to see if it worked? I suppose it's possible that something happened in transit, but I'm sure the manager was thinking about the nasty post you COULD have posted if they had said, "sorry, no dice" on the favor / deal for the new replacement. As is, your post makes the deal they made you very inexpensive advertising.

And considering how popular *cough* GC is these days, good PR is something they desperately need right about now...

Good for you. I bought Atmosphere from GC last year that had already been opened and registered with Spectrasonics. As I was leaving Cali to head home the next day to Montreal, I had to tear back over to GC and get another 'new' version. Very impressed.

GC managers got this one right. Imagine what you might have posted if they gave you the middle finger to rotate on.
