I’m close to finishing my new rack system and I was wondering how many modules can be pilled up in a rack case? With the old Roland Super JV or JD racks, each one is +- 11 lb so the one in the bottom would be under a lot of pressure…. BTW…I’m making my own rack case.

Yeap, I thought that something was wrong...:-)
But the fact that all my modules will be hanging just by the side part with screws is weird….I think my project will start with some drawer ideas.

What he said, plus if you can put the heaviest module on the bottom. That'll keep the center of gravity lower, making it more stable.

Thanks for the tip, Ronnie.
I've always been just a wee-bit unstable. I think that's 'cause I was a child of the Seventies.
No matter.

if it's really heavy they put really strong ears on them - they'll be fine hanging "by the side part"

For really small things such as FMR RNPs or RNCs, I might use industrial-strength Velcro and attach 'em to a rack tray. For everything else, they get bolted on, heavy stuff on the bottom, as others have said. If something gets really hot or has obvious vents, leave a little space. People rackmount stuff that weighs 40-50 pounds sometimes, so obviously rackmounting stuff is not an issue with something that's as little as the stuff you're trying to rack.

Ok I’m convinced... I know it sound immature but I thought the ear hanging wasn’t the best way to set racks. Thank you all.

On the really heavy - throw it in the back of a Herc and go - stuff, they also put in side rails to support the units. Or so I have been told.

Ummm, I guess you'd say the same thing about handles, buttons, latches and what not.
Those ears are MADE for just that-mounting them in a rac kof your choosing, or in your casr, building. Buy quality parts from company's like Raxxess, mount them as recommended and you'll be fine.

Hey dalpozlead, don't feel so bad, when I first went into a studio and saw rack units I assumed they were also fixed at the back. I couldn't quite get it into my head that these really heavy rack modules were hanging just from the front rack ears.
Now I carry round a Fantom XR in a rack case which sees a healthy amount of pressure get put on those ears and its not bent yet. I do check the screws are still tight every now and then though...

I put the deepest units on the bottom and work my way up to shallow units on the top. That makes it easier to connect cables. Nothing worse than trying to shove a MIDI cable into the back of a rack unit that is placed between two deep units.
There was a thread started about a year ago on tips for rack mounting with some good suggestions. Another one of my tips is to lay the rack unit on it's back when loading or unloading units. That helps reduce scratches caused by sliding units in and out.

Good tips, all. Any time I change the components in my rack, I'll do exactly that, lay it on its back. Much easier to get the screws started when gravity helps keep the component level to the rack rails.
