I would imagine we all have some records that we would consider our "guilty pleasures" I was just curious what some of you might consider your guilty pleasures and what they might be....I guess I'll go first....in no particular order:

Supertramp - "Paris" live
Radiohead - "The Bends"
Toy Matinee - "Toy Matinee"
Talk Talk - "Laughing Stock"
The Blue Nile - "Hats"
Paul Bley - The Paul Bley Quartet(ECM) with Frisell, Surman, Motian
Stereolab - "Mars Audiac Quintet"
Pete Townsend - "White City"
Tim Story - "Untitled"
Brian Eno - "Here Comes The Warm Jets"

hmmm.... not quite sure what you mean by "Guilty pleasures", but if it means things you like that you're a little embarrased by, well... I've always been a closet Carpenters fan. Oh, and 3 years ago I took my daughter to see Hillary Duff, and I actually enjoyed the concert.

OK, I'm off to go bury my head in the sand.....

I admitted some guitly pleasures years ago and have never lived it down. So I will pass on it this time. I do have some very guilty pleasures with music though.

Is this thread really about guilty pleasures? Maybe they are really lists of personal favorites? There are some very good recordings (Bley, Jarrett, Ashkenazy/Previn and more) listed. (Also, I believe the Jarrett recording listed is titled Staircase. Two tracks with "Hourglass" in their titles are on it.)

I'll give you two true guilty pleasures discs though:

Fancy Footwork - CHROMEO
Oro - ABBA (their greatest hits recorded in Spanish)

well, i guess guilty pleasures can be defined in a variety of ways....if your guilty pleasures happen to be your favorites, so be it....i think of guilty pleasures as things that I turn to when i need an "atitude adjustment"....i'm not sure how else to put it...

ABBA in Spanish....wow

Guilty pleasure would imply that it's something you're not supposed to like by majority standards or that you are ashamed of it. I don't think Rachmaninoff should be a guilty pleasure, unless you are listening to it with your neighbor's wife in the bathtub.

Having said that, here are some guilty pleasures by my definition. This is stuff that most people roll their eyes at.

Gloria Estefan's song: "One, Two, Three"
David Benoit's "Freedom at Midnight"
The Muppet Show soundtrack.
All TOTO, even the cheesiest of the lame 80s ballads.

Agreed. I don't think Paul Bley or Keith would fall in that category either.

For me...well maybe "Peter North and Ron Jeremy Together"

Sorry for diverging this thread off intended path. I suppose I'm feeling more guilty about some of my selections than I should. There are individual songs that have a place in my collection that probably fit into this:

Barry Manilow - Copacabana
Carpenters - Goodbye to Love
Eric Carmen - Never Going to Fall in Love Again
Kalapana - Moon and Stars
Badfinger - No Matter What
Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror
Michael Jackson - Human Nature
Jefferson Starship - Sara
Billy Joel - And So It Goes
Stevie Wonder - Overjoyed

OK, maybe the Barry and Eric, but other than that, that's a pretty rockin list

I also have to state that Badfinger was one very badass group. "Power pop" at its inception, and at its finest.

Man, I think Overjoyed is one of Stevie's finest...certainly his vocal.

I too loved Badfinger. Tragic end for Peter Hamm and those other members. "Day by Day" was my favorite BF tunes.

Human Nature is very cool I think. Miles did a nice arrangement on it too.

'can't say I ever got into anything from Barry except "Could it be Magic", which I loved. However,I do reference him often in rehearsals with the Worship Team. I'll look at the drummer and say, "ok, before the last chorus at the break I need the big Barry Manilow drum fill". Anyone who heard all those dreadful ballads in the 70's knows what I'm talking about.

Why guilty? I like some pop, and I'm not ashamed of it. I've played it quite a bit, especially prog. I still love Yes, most ELP, etc. Toto have some really classy solution, though I can't stand the lyrics. ;\) I often listen to Kate Bush, Sting, Joni Mitchell... I adore Stevie Wonder, even the latest productions. I've learned lots of thing by listening to Michael Jackson. It's often over-produced, but there's clearly an idea of sound behind that music. Same for some Madonna things. I like some Tori Amos, and a few Morisette songs too. I also like Kraftwerk and a few electronica acts.

I'm probably forgetting a lot of names... but probably, my most 'guilty' pleasure is Tom Jones. I just like his singing! Some of his most, um, Las Vegas-style arrangements are hard to digest, but his version of Prince's "Kiss" with The Art Of Noise is pure genius. \:\)

Addendum...

I tried very hard to like Radiohead. They have the right attitude and taste for me to enjoy their music, but to my ears, their music just goes on and on without too much substance.

And while I love almost every individual Bjork song, I find it hard to listen to any one of her albums from beginning to end.

I agree with you Kevin - I like everything on that list except for the Manilow tune. Don't get me wrong - I like a lot of Barry's stuff. "When October Goes" is one of my favorite songs ever.

I don't know why anybody would feel the above is guilty (or maybe the rest of your list, for that matter!).

I don't feel guilty about anything that I listen to, quite frankly. I have an extremely wide taste in music, going from African field recordings to dub to hardcore to Javanese gamelan to jazz to indie rock to pop, ranging from really esoteric to extremely popular.

Some of my friends think that it's odd that I enjoy listening to Sade, ELO, Boston's first album, Iron Maiden and a few '80s hair metal songs, so maybe this is as close as it gets to "guilty pleasures"?

Timwat mentioned Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror. I dunno, I love that song! Fantastic vocal. MJ's known for quite a lot of other things, a shame because they overshadow his vocal ability.

Sorry again I'm screwing up the "guilty pleasure" definition. When my two sons reached 20 and 18 years old, I became summarily uncool and ALL my music became guilty pleasures. Here's a few more:

Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again, Naturally
Robert Palmer - Every Kinda People
James Ingram/Linda Rondstadt - Somewhere Out There (from An American Tail soundtrack)
Gene Wilder - Pure Imagination (from the Willy Wonka soundtrack)

At one time I had a K-tel album from the '70s. "Funniest Songs" or something of that nature. "Camp Grenada", "Charlie Brown", "The Streak", "Li'l Red Riding Hood", "Splish Splash", etc.
