Check out 3:20 for the bass solo.

Looks to me like Swallow's playing a modded EB2 here. But what I'm really interested in is what kind of pups he's installed and how he's achieving that honky fuzz tone. Any insights?

Flat wound strings and a tube head of some sort. Overdrive the input stage to get it to break up and adjust EQ accordingly to get mid-range honk.

Nothing to add--but thanks for the video! Wow, that's how you do that.

It's a great tone, & not one I'd usually associate with jazz. Big humbuckers & play with a pick. Works.

I believe that was a hollow body bass sort of like a Gibson Es-335 style but a bass version. I think it is a Gibson EB-2.

By today's standards, is that an Epi Jack Casady sig. bass? It's the only in-production model I've seen that looks anything like it.

Man, what a melodic solo. Steve Swallow has always been one of my all-time faves.

Me? I don't like that bass tone one bit. I dig the player and the notes, but not the tone.

And I do like the vibe player very, very much. I haven't played a gig with a vibe player in a very long time, and even then it was not very often. Vibe players are like key players with six fingers cut off. A key player with 60% less is more melodic right out of the box. And the big collar is snappy! You don't see those much anymore these days....

Welcome aboard Dr. Thump! Who are you? Did you leave a post on "welcome" thread that I missed???

Peace
Paul K
