So I went out for a drink today with a good friend of mine, and as the evening was coming to a close I suggested we go for one last pint at this pub we sometimes go to. Turns out this ex-waitress was there whom we knew from years ago (at least four). She came and sat with us and we had a chat.

Turns out she sings, plays piano, accordion, whistles and other instruments and is writing music for her 7-piece band. Needless to say I dropped the fact that I play bass and gave her my business card \:\) She says her style of music lies in Arabic, ethnic and folk, three things I know absolutely nothing about. So I told her she should definitely give me a call \:D

Anyone else have had one of these chance encounters that (may) (have) lead to gigs ?

Very cool. You might want to check out Tinariwen for some very cool Arabic/Berber bass parts. Good luck, I hope this leads to greater things.

I've had a chance encounter that led to a gig.

About four years ago, I was shopping for dog food when I happened upon an old friend, a drummer, who I had not seen in at least ten years. It led to my gig with the Sarah Evans Trio. That turned out a be a VERY musically rewarding and profitable chance encounter.

Well both she and I were three sheets to the wind, so I'm not sure she'll remember much of our conversation. Heck if I hadn't posted this thread, I would not have remembered much of that conversation either \:D We'll see what happens next.

I am always having those kind of encounters.
Seems like everywhere I go there is a drummer asking if I'm playing with anyone. That's not to say that I'm that great. There are just not many bassists up here and you can't projectile vomit without hitting a guitarist or drummer. The problem is the guys worth devoting time to can be counted on one hand.

Go for it EPB. Add another style to your arsenal.

Give me a call about the Arabic, ethnic (well some) and folk stuff if you need to. That sounds like a great opportunity. These opportunities are made to be taken. I wouldn't worry too much about the style. If I have to play a new style I immerse myself in it as much as possible for weeks but you know most bass is about roots and fifths regardless of style. Your ears are your best guide.

Why else would you want to projectile vomit, if not to hit a guitarist or drummer?

Hell, based on the "Acoustic Project" thread, Phil's you man. And (geographically speaking) he's right across the river.

To hit a female vocalist.

You know, contrary to what bass players believe, chicks aren't all too into bass players as it is. If we projectile vomit in their general direction, I'm certain our chances won't increase ...

I had at the lowdown gig... Bret the drummer asked me if I wanted to join a rock indie band...I said yes and he was supposed to call me. He never did, I text him but got no reply. Oh well \:\(
