I've shown my love for natural finishes in basses and countless times i've said that I don't care for fender. That has changed I want a red jazz bass with a white pickguard. I love the growl on those basses and they can really deliver the funk. Nowadays I have lowered the strap so I'm looking alot more funkier.

Maybe this is a silly GAS thing but I want one.

On another note and instead of posting another thread to boost up my count.

How do you guys relax on stage. If everyone in the band is playing stif are you affected? My other half mentioned that I don't dance while playing and I thought I was a stage dude but turns out i'm not. Last reharsal I've made a point of shaking my booty....but all the others are stif as rocks.
Would it look silly me being the only guy dancing on stage?

Thanks

I am the only guy dancing in our band. My wife said I look fine and it adds something. Looks like I am having fun (I am). Our singer stands there like a statue and sings. I think that is odd, but he sounds good. Guitarist doesn't dance but he really sets the place on fire with his playing so no problem. The drummer doesn't have enough rythym to dance.

In a live performance the VISUAL is as important as the AUDIO IMO.
Do you want to go to a club/pub/bar and "see" a band stand there and play with nothing more than heads staring at headstocks and only the hands moving?
It is entertainment. You are there to entertain the crowd...even moreso when there is no one there. (4 or 5 people)
I am not saying go CHiliPeppers beserk but get into the song.
YOUR own style should come out.
Entwistle was a ROCK but he was more like a monument. He had that control over you. Flea is.... well, a flea... jumping around feeling every beat.
If you are getting into the music I think the other guys will slowly follow suit. Bump into your g****r player, make faces at the drummer... sing-a-long with the crowd (if available). You need to make it LOOK like there is no other place that you want to be. EVEN if you are playing Sweet Home Alabama for the 2,985,478th time.

i'm saying it, though. i love to move when i play. it doesn't feel right if i'm not moving.

also, hopefully you'll realize before you buy a new jazz bass that you actually want a mint green pickguard instead of a white one.

Red bass with a mint green pickguard? eeeew!

The upright has curtailed my ability to move about the stage pretty much ... I tried spinning it once and knocked its mike of the high tech, black garbage can stand it was sitting on.

Our vox sits in a chair. She doesn't move much either.

A drummer with rythym??? That's pure science fiction.

1.) Of course you want a red Jazz bass. It is the sine qua non, the ne plus ultra, the je ne sais quoi. The shiznit. Get it. Then, of course, you'll need a Precision.

2.) A friend tells me that half the fun of hearing me play bass is watching me play bass. By all means, shake what ya got. Encourage your bandmates to do the same. (I realize this might not come naturally, you guys being British and all. Do your best.) You'll enjoy playing more, you'll play better because you're relaxed, and your audience will respond to it, too.

When you go to get the Jazz bass, actually buy a P-Bass. You can act like you thought it was the Jazz bass you were getting. A few people will ask you how you could be such a dumbass. \:\( The rest will congratulate you on having a new P-bass.

No not really Phil, but if you insist I'll accept. My birthday is soon, so there you go you have a good excuse. \:D

I think it's my GAS talking. At least it's a not that expensive GAS.

I'd like to state clearly now that I have never given David a gift of a Russian girl - nor given any other woman (or man) as a gift to anyone!

(Just in case someone misinterprets that sentence)

Funny, I went back to playing bass after many years because I had to sub in my ex-band.

I realized now that as the bass player, you have so much control over the mood and feel that the OTHER musicians in the band will have during the performance. It's like you're responsible for the foundation of the the dansce floor while the other musicians embellish it.

So no matter wheter you dance or not, you'll have the greates impact on the groove of your show if you just relax, be aware of what you are playing and really feel the music and how you are affecting it.

But actually, it is the title of your post that caught my attention because since I went back to the bass and became aware of what I jjust said, I've been dreaming about getting a J as well. It's as if it's the ultimate groove machine.

Best of luck.

This is a reasonable thing to want.

But why not think "outside the box," as dreadful yuppies say?

I recently got an old Yamaha with a J bridge pickup, P neck pickup, a neck that I liked, and lots of sustain & growl. All for only $350 US. It was even red. ;\)

Just sayin'.

Yes.

When I said I want a Jazz Bass that's just the looks and pickup combination. If it plays well and sounds good it can even be a no name brand I don't care.

Mmmmm my Fernandes Jazz Bass is red... white pickguard... feels and sounds pretty much alike a Fender... costed me about 110$ off eBay... \:P

Will trade for your Spector, David!! \:\) I still got my Blue (tm?) pearled pickguard Slammer by Hammer one (the one on my avatar) which I have at my office's cubicle. Must say it is AWESOME, being a real cheap bass and all, it is real wood (at least!) is heavy, and sounds heavenly good. My friend who has the awesome mind-numbing bass collection (which has had several old Jazzes, currently a couple ones, including a '67) said it has nothing to envy from a Fender one. \:\) The Slammer was also a bargain.. about 70$ (also off eBay, what would you expect? ;\) ) and only had to re-wire the pots since the previous owner went so frantic on them they were all loose and snapped all the wires from them. A 5 minutes operation which got me a wonderful instrument for a bargain. \:P

So, David... deal? ;\)

you clearly do not understand.

it is very subtle in real life. it would look absolutely stellar on the right red. like if it were candy apple red, vintage mint green is the only correct answer.

You are correct to say that we Brits are a bit stiff, but dear young David is Portugese. There's no excuse for being a stiffy.

I still think Sonic Blue would be good but a deep red Jazz makes sense.

I have heard that two tablespoons of Castor Oil is good for GAS. I have never tried it but I have been known to get rid of GAS at the most inapprpriate times. Maybe a red Jazz bass may be better than other medicinces.

Mmmm, I wouldn't say stiff, I'd say reserved. First time I went to the UK I found Brits to be very warm, friendly people, just not outgoing, so much.
