Let me see if I can do this without screwing it up. We played a coffee shop last weekend and had the gig recorded. I decided that weekend that it was time to take the ol' girl out to meet the public.
aaah, beautiful.
Anyway, the purcussive thump that was recroded was different from anything I had ever played. Sounded just like the tracks were the bass is playing behind Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald. It's like a fourth member of the band (I cropped the keys out of these pics). The band, our vox boyfriend (keys in a different band) and the sound guy said to stick with the upright. Guess this is going to be my main axe (can I call it an axe) for quite some time now. The sight and sound are just perferct for a band doing jazz standards. I'm glad I made the decision to bag an URB. (That's the '51 P reissue in the background).
Should be getting my copie(s) of the demo next week. I'll link on this thread if anyone is interesed in hearing them. I'll remove the pics and replace them with links once I get the website straightened out.

I decided that weekend that it was time to take the ol' girl out to meet the public. You won't keep that keys/singer long if you refer to her like that.
The basses look nice. I look forward to hearing the sounds.

I got handed one of those '51 Ps at a store nearby to try on a Laney 4x10 cab (By the way.. rear vented... any opinions? I think that would make htings on stage more difficult than a front-vented one... SPECIALLY since most stages I'm playing on lately are open-air, big ones... and I'm looking for a smaller, lighter, tighter sounding 4x10 than my "el-cheapo custom made" one. unfortunately in here people has gone crazy with the prices (charging the equivalent to 2.000 US$ for a single 15" cab, for an instance, and nothing fancy about it, no SWR or GK or the likes...)...
I played it... neck as a baseball bat.. found it a little bit un-versatile... then I told the store's guy to get me something a little more similar to what I commonly use.. ie a "J" (they had none) or some kind of modern-ish 2-humbuckers toy... ended up handing me a Warwick RockBass wich I severely disliked, and which was very BADLY set-up...
But now back to topic... what's your experience with the '51? Just am curious...

Does your singer ALWAYS sit down? That's just... weird!
Seriously though, I'd like to hear some clips too.
Looking at the song list on your site... is "Black Orpheus" the same song as "Manha De Carnaval"?

Tom, as long as I don't get "my old girl" with "the old girls" I should be in good shape!
KF3, yes she does. I am the only one in the band that stands for the entire gig ... regardless of which bass I play. I would think that sitting would do something funky to the diaphragm or projection or something like that. Yes, same song ... the second one being sung in the Portugese of the original musical. Man, I love Bossa tunes!
jc72, been my primary "Sunday Goin' to Meetin'" bass for about two years. Yes, the neck is like a cricket bat. Yes, the damned thing is heavy (9lb,3oz or just under 4.1kg). The bridge is one of the old style twin barrels and intonation is a nightmare. That said, it's got better tone than anything else I own and several "rock" bassist have tried to buy it off me on the spot (was a "wedding" present from my wife, someone gets it when I die). Very warm with a good bit of sustain. Holds tune crazy long. It is definately my favorite bass guitar ... and since Ashley isn't looking, I wouldn't play classic rock with anything else.
Quite simply, it is the P that sound the way a P should have sounded all along.

I hadn't thought about the effect on the voice, just that it's harder to grab people's attention when you're sitting down.

Yeah, I find them amazing too, I always have this "What made them think of that?!" feeling at hearing this music which is so soft, yet sensual and technically demanding all at the same time. It's fantastic stuff.
The only version of Manha that I know (besides on the film) is the Dexter Gordon cover on "Getting Around".

Black Orpheus (a movie film title - Orfeu Negro) was written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Manhã de Carnaval (there were English lyrics called 'A Day in the Life of a Fool')was from the same movie and written by Luiz Bonfá. I think sometimes Manha de Carnival is mistitled Black Orpheus.

Phil, I'm very familiar with the Discography - I make myself the "unoffical" librarian/historian of the songs for the band. One of the major fake books lists it as Manha De Carnival (Black Orphes), albeit incorrectly; should read Manha De Carnival (Morning of the Carnival) from Black Orphes.
The musical is pretty damned bizarre if you are into weird forgien indie type films that were made before indie was chic (1959, I believe). It is a loose (VERY loose) adaptation of the Greek myth/tragedy "Orpheus" set in contemporary Brazil during Carnival - briefly a young man who looses his love and play his lyre so sadly and profoundly the gods grant him permission to decend into Hades and get her back PROVIDED that during the return to the upper world he does not look back at her. Guess what happens...

Uprights definitely attract attention, plus they can hold their own in a pure, unamplified acoustic setting, something few acoustic bass guitars can.
If it makes you want to play, that's half the battle.

kind of the same thing that was made with Bizet's "Carmen" in early 60s if I'm not wrong, when Harry belafonte had a starring role in "Carmen Jones"... a couple adaptations to the history, and a more bliues-y approach to the original score, and voilá.

I find it much easier to develop a strong vibrato in my voice while seated - but since I'm in a rock band, that's really not an option unless I'm recording...

I just think that people who sit down don't have as commanding a stage presence. What you gain in voice modulation you lose in presentation.
It doesn't ALWAYS hold true, of course. Singing piano players are allowed (by custom) to sit, while singing drummers don't have much choice. And then, there's musicians who are stuck in wheelchairs.
