This album came out fairly recently, and, having seen the tour in St. Louis, I wanted to check it out. Great show--great song choices. (Once I heard "Natural Science" and "Secret Touch", I was completely satisfied, they could have gone anywhere from that point. "A Passage to Bangkok" was a bit of a surprise!)
I am interested to hear people's takes on this live recording. Decent sound quality, but does it hold up to previous records? I find that previous years like the Rush In Rio recordings found the band playing more aggressively and a with better chops for the most part. Are they winding down? I was surprised at the number of (small) mistakes I noticed on this recording. Maybe it's just me.
It's still very good if you're a Rush fan, so you'll still want to check it out! A novelty: Geddy brought out his Ric out (a newer 4003) on "A Passage to Bangkok" and it sounds great! He stayed pretty close to the original recording for that one. It was neat to see live in any case. Oh, and yes, he did use his Jaco bass and a red custom Jazz on a couple of tunes... "Malignant Narcissism" for the Jaco, but I forget which song for the custom J.
Check it out, and say what you think of it!

Oh yeah, that was his main bass. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I was just listing the oddities that got one song per unique bass.

I thought I saw (maybe on bp.tv?) that he had several of those with various tunings offstage.

I like the new live CD. The playing is - IMHO - not as energetic as on Rush in Rio. But the new songs sound good live, and hearing Digitial Man live is always cool.

I saw them here in Puerto Rico (where this leg of the tour started) and they were great. I was on the left side of the stage, and Geddy had about six basses:the ric,the jaco, the red jazz tuned down 1 step, and about 3 black jazz basses.

Altho' I love Rush, I must say that the worst live album is Exit Stage Left.

Eh, it's okay for its time. I like the drum solo in the middle of YYZ.

I found that it didn't seem to be a complete album,of their tour at the time. Seemed very bitty, or if something was missing and a bit flat.(especially when it first came out on vinyl) Altho' barchetta &tom sawyer rock!

Red Barchetta is my all time favorite. Thanks for posting a review of the show, I havea chance to see them on the 4th of July, now I really want to go! The thing I noticed about Rush is that they just seem to be enjoying themselves, and letting the audience see it.

Followup: I did the see Rush at Atlantic City on July 4th.
Excellent show, worth the price of admission. Why it wasn't sold out I cant' imagine, but it worked out well because we got to 14th row seats at $50 off of face value each!
I'd last seen Rush in 2003, the show was so good then that here was littel doubt I'd see them agian if I could. I was not disappointed.
I can't go song by song right now, but I will say taht I like the new material, and will definitely buy the studio or live version of "Snakes and Arrows".
Of course, hearing the hits, as well as the obscurities mixed in was excellent. The whole part really works throughout the show, total effort, and they look like they are havingthe time of their lives. What more could you want?
Does Geddy change strings every show? He beats the hell out of them. HE is a god, no doubt
My ears rang well into the next day. If you get a chance, go see them.

Mm, I'll bet he does change strings each show. His hand pretty much thwacks that bass the entire concert.
I'd buy Snakes and Arrows live. Not the best live CD ever, but, the album is a bit dry if you ask me. I actually prefer the semi-maligned Vapor Trails in terms of overall sound. Still, there are some great moments on Snakes and Arrows, and I really love the songs "Bravest Face" and the last track ("We Hold On", I believe it is called).

Thanks for the input. If the sound quality is good, I usually prefer the live versions.
The mix in AC wasa bit midrange muddy, but the sound guys fixed that pretty quick, it was a wall of sound but every note was clear at the same time.
It was noteworthy that Geddy was almost apologetic for playing newer material at first, then diving back into the classics. Face it, many of Rush's songs are like genetic memory, the newer songs are just as good as the old, but they don't have the benefit of being ingrained into the audience's DNA. I only own a few Rush albums, but after 30 years of repeated exposure, I know so many of them so well, and not just the hits. Getting to hear "Passage to Bangkok" live was fantastic, as great a surprise as hearing "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" years ago.
