Anybody seen any listings for a Wal Bass for sale? Haven't seen one on ebay in a while and I'm in the market for one. On a similar note can anyone recommend any other basses with similar tone seeing as Wals are discontinued? And not a EBMM... I already have one.

Thank you very much. I wasn't really looking for a 5-string but I might consider it. Anyone know of any 4-strings out there? Preferably a Mark III.

I've been busy playing!
I don't actively look for Wals. They do tend to go very quickly, there was a nice one in Denmark Street, London an couple of months back for just over £2000.
I was lucky enough to buy mine secondhand 15 years ago for £800.
Sorry I'm no help, EBMM. Are you the chap who posted a comment on my youtube site btw?
Here is a link to my fine collection of Wal links. It's worth watching the Wal messageboards although things get snapped up quick.

Although I do frequent Youtube, I didn't post anything on yours. Thanks for the help though. Hopefully one of these days I will track one down.

It could be a long wait. basscentral.com used to have a fistful. I'd call them if I were you.

I have to say that mine plays like an absolute dream. I've been practising almost all the time on ABG. I played two gigs on Saturday - the first on ABG and the second on the Wal and after the physicality of playing the ABG, the Wal pretty much played itself.

I would even be happy if I could just get a hold of some Wal pups. But, I know they usually aren't separated from the basses. Has anyone heard of a new luthier that is supposed to be continuing Wals ?

There was a rumour that Martin (Sei basses) who is based a short walk from my house was going t take over the name. I know him although I haven't asked him. I think it's unlikely as he has his own vision and ideas. I'm sure this is just a rumour.

You should ask him for me < : ) ....If not ask him if he will make some pups similar to the Wal's.

I wonder how close a bass with Q-Tuners and the ACG preamp would get to the Wal tone? As I understand it you're looking for a relatively broad aperture passive pickup with a high resonant frequency and then a sweepable filter based preamp.

Nice. I had a 6 string Grind that I loved. PUP's were a little weak, but the feel was fantastic. Too bad I rarely played it and it was sold only after a few months. I was a bad parent...

It sounded much better as a piccolo bass. Alas, it belonged to Pierre, my drummer friend who has reclaimed it. But he has found a jazz gig for me.

I notice they are way big... Does anyone know whether Barto makes a same-size retrofit?
I would need some measurements to let you know but it looks like some Bartolini MK-1's might fit and they sound pretty good.

Yea they don't usually have the measurements. But, I work in a music store and we have some here. I'll measure them for you.

I'd bet you could get pretty close. Really extremely close if you had a Wal to A/B with and the proper tools to reverse engineer their preamp.

Also- http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177917
quotes:
"Thanks Moo. I had seen them before, but forgot about them. Reading through them now, it certainly describes a circuit similar the the generic Alembic SVF (state variable filter) based filter. The Wal "attack" control is functionally similar to the Alembic "Q" controls, except that it is set internally to a predetermined boost at the roll off, not adjustable by pot or switches on the front of the bass.
Comments based upon this description from the second link. "The two tone knobs operate electronic low-pass filters whose roll-off frequencies vary with the position of the control. Fully clockwise at 10, the spectrum is full and flat. As the controls are backed off, the spectrums of the appropriate pick-ups are foreshortened (roll-off 12db/octave). Therefore, the dominant tone character varies throughout the entire range of the control. Pulling up the tone knobs produces a quasiparametric boost of about 10db to the harmonics which lie at or near the roll-off frequency set by the rotary position."
So it's likely a pickup - buffer - SVF - Vol/pan - active DI - Tx sort of signal path, needing at least 8 - 10 opamps. Not too hard to duplicate functionally, but whether the chosen parameters in someone else's design would mean it would sound the same is another story. And of course, you can't get the Wal pups...."
"Wal pups... Super wide aperture, coil sets for each string actively blended."
