AHHH! So I'm working on Cappuzzi's bass concerto for upright bass (learning it that is) and it is boring me. It's amusing, but in order to get it down I am having to play it quite a lot. and only the first maybe sixteen bars, because that is how my teacher is having me learn it. Any way I am looking for advice on keeping a piece interesting so i don't end up playing it like a machine.

Thanks, back to the Capuzzi that is my slave driver, Nathaniel.

P.S. I do really like the piece it is just wearing thin.

You're a Capuzzi.

Play it:
1st time with a touch of swing
2nd time play it straight
3rd time play it ahead of the beat
4th time play it straight
5th time play it behind the beat
6th time play it straight
7th time play it an octave up (if poss)
8th time play it straight

I feel your pain, Thanny. By the way, welcome back I am working my way through Bach's "Prelude in C Major" and what I find is there's a difference between playing the notes, and making them sound musically interesting. Currently my rendition of this piece is quite ehm, mechanic I'm going to take Davo-L's advice and make it swing a bit

Yeah, that's what I do with exercises. Play them in different styles and that not only makes them more interesting, it also means that I have to think about what I'm doing and not just go through the motions.

Just stick with it. Get the mechanics down. Focus on form. Focus on counting. Focus on reading.

Once you have that down, then focus on the music.

Thanny, practicing that kind of music has bored bassists for 100s of years. You're just the first generation to have so many other exciting distractions (and the associated rise in ADHD).

If you can, pretend you have lost power at your house. And put away any battery operated devices, like mp3 players. Sit in the dead silence until practicing bass seems like a great alternative.

Use one electric light if you need it to see the music. No sense trying to use candles and accidentally setting the house on fire! And of course if you're playing electric then power up the bare minimum you need to hear yourself. That's it! Nothing else!

You may find it's kind of refreshing to take a break from the modern world every now and then.

So thanks for the advice. Having just now checked i will try. Sadly an octave up would be all in thumb position, which i have not learned. I had a lesson last night and have progressed to the next two bars. No this may sound silly but A) these are the hardest two bars and B) They are the transition from the exposition to the second part of sonata-allegra form Which i can't remember the name for. lol It is getting more interesting. once i've got it down pehaops i'll post a recording.
