It must have been a week or two ago when the Chicago area (midwest) took a drastic turn in the weather. I know, because every single one of my guitars/basses necks have changed slightly. So I'm trying to work on finding a comfortable medium with the constant humidity and temp changes.
I'm thinking I might empty out a closet, put them all in there, keep the door closed, and put a humidifier in there?
Does that seem like a slightly better way to keep my instruments in 'check' throughout the year? I think doing it this way will be cheaper and better for the overall space than buying hardshell cases and a humidifier for each. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Move to California. I never have to adjust any of my instruments.

I live in Arkansas, and the saying around here (probably everywhere else too, but hey...) is "If you don't like the weather in Arkansas, just wait around 5 minutes."
I just get used to tuning all the time. Everything else changes so slightly, it's not worth getting worked up about.

True, I mean I've dealt with the tuning and truss rod adjustments for, 15 years or so now, but with my collection of instruments growing year by year, it's like an all day event sometimes LOL.

Do you live in a non-airconditioned home? Usually, with central air your temp and humidity stays pretty constant. I live in Texas and our weather is changing constantly but inside my home there are no problems. Rocky

Yea, we have air, but every now and then we just get those drastic changes where I leave the windows open over night and while I'm at work we shoot up 40 degrees, or get lots of rain or something and that's when I notice it.
Nothing is in any immediate danger (but what do I know about wood), I just want to play it safe and avoid these minor adjustments when I can.

It's too miserable here to leave the windows open. Besides, all the stupid mosquitoes would come in.

Missouri has had the highest amount of rainfall this year in recorded history for the first six months of the year. It's still been cool on and off, and the necks on all my instruments have changed. I plan to wait til summer before they get an adjustment. We haven't had a lot of mosquitos yet.
Yup, they have these things called screens...
Last time I was in San Francisco and driving in the Bay area I noticed the houses didn't have screens in the windows. They must not have bugs in SF. Whoa!

Nope, no bugs here.
We don't have air-conditioning and only use the heat for a month or two (and don't have central heating).
The weather is perfect here.
Highs in the 70's in the summer, 60's in the winter.
Lows in the 50's in the summer, 40's in the winter.
It just costs a fortune to live here and there could be an earthquake at any time.
No big deal.

The cost of living is what has kept me from moving there all these years. As for the earthquakes, we're waiting for the New Madrid fault to bust wide open and the Mississipi River to flow backwards again.

I've never noticed an effect in London or California. Quite disparate climates too. Maybe I'm just oblivious.

But oddly enough, 2 1/2 hours east of there - It can get into the 100's for weeks ata time and be too hot to sleep without AC. It dips to the 30's in the winter and can snow at any time. Power outages are a way of life in the winter - as are firewood and heavy clothes. All of the Bay Area bugs have migrated here and are constantly reminding you of their existance. I actually have to spray the outside of the house once a week. The good news is winter only lasts 3 months, we have one week of spring and one of fall and the rest is summer. Yes, we have earthquakes, and it costs a forune to live here too but the fly fishing and scenery are worth it.
I have never had to adjust any of my instruments (9 at the moment) either but I do keep the music room somewhat climate controlled. I have noticed when there are severe temp changes I have to tune more but have never had a truss rod issue.

THE BIG ONE ON THE NEW MADRID FAULT (TM) was scheduled for Dec 4, 1991. I was a senior in high school in Altoona, Iowa. There was no THE BIG ONE. I celebrated by watching Arachnophobia on VHS with a half dozen friends. Life was good.

Weather doesn't even care enough about you to hate you. Mother Nature is the ultimate hater. I like her style.

It'll happen eventually. These things don't just stop happening because we want them to. Thing is you can't walk around worrying about it or you'll drive yourself crazy. There is something major to worry about in every location of this country if you really want to worry about something.
In Seattle we have earthquakes and the fact that most of the downtown waterfront is built on fill which will liquify in a big enough quake. We also have a few volcanos that are overdue for a major event.
Of course a meteor could fall out of the sky and hit you on the head right now. But why worry about it? I'm more worried about the big Monty Python cartoon foot falling out of the sky to crush me.

Back on topic.
I have a dehumidifier in my basement (where I have my project studio) and generally have no issues at all. Occasionally I need to tweak my MM Stingray 5 (especially if I take it out of the house) and sometimes need to check tuning but generally nothing major.

I am sure the finish on instruments has much to do with how reactive the wood is to humidity. Thick polyurethane finishes probably keep most of the moisture out. However, I don't think it does much to protect from temperature changes. Most of the movement we see in necks, probably comes from temperature changes more than humidity. Rocky

I'm still cleanining sand and dust from Iraq out of my JBass, it gets into everything. I am sure the dust is the reason my pots were cutting in and out. When the weather was hot and dry the sweat would just drip off my fingers and onto the strings. The rainy season allowed me to find out that poorly grounded equipment is dangerous. I played one set with gloves on to keep from getting shocked. That being said, I didn't have a lot of trouble keeping in tune.

I tweak because I care.
The endless tweaking I do is what has created my lust for a graphite bass, either the Synapse or a Moses Vertical Jump Bass.
