I have never, ever played "out". I have jammed with a few band at rehearsals and of course my own but I have never played out in front of anyone other than people that stop by to hang out at practices.
Tonight I am invited and will be going to gig to join in and play for a couple of cover songs that this band does. They mostly do originals Their myspace here
I speak publicly, teach part time at a local community college and deal with the public all of the time. However, I am already a little nervous but in a good way. They always draw a big crowd whenever they play locally.
When I get home from work today I think I will be practicing until the jitters are gone.
OK< just needed to get that off of my chest in public.

Enjoy the moment. I find that smiling and realising what fun I'm having counteracts any nerves. Juts avoid drinking to settle your nerves!
The groove is more important than the notes!

The nerves will pass. Remember to breath (not kidding). It has been said a million times but it is true, don't worry about any missed notes etc. You will be one of the few that notices. The rush you get from playing a live gig is intoxicating. Enjoy!!!

Have fun, Jeff!
Remember, that they have asked you to play, so they think you are ready.

Well, my cherry is popped,.... so to speak.
I got there right before they started and my palms were sweaty from the minute I walked into the door. I met our drummer there for some moral support.
The band sounded real good and very experienced. I joined in on the beginning of the 3rd set as more and more people were coming in. I assumed it would clear out by then but it became more crowded.
I did Rockin In The Free World but they do it different than my band and different from the record so I had two minor glitches. For the beginning of the 3rd verse when the bass is normally heard with the 8th notes on the D and C they wanted me to play soft and quiet because their guitars do that part so at least I was warned. They also do 2 solos and did not tell me when they were going to throw that in so I had to play catch-up.
Other than that, it went very well and they seemed pretty pumped after the song and thanked me telling me I did a good as I expected is customary. Anyway, after that set the guitarists were busting the bass player/lead singer because they liked the way I play the song better. Bottom line I enjoyed myself.
And one more thing.............. What is with the chicks with guys in bands? There were a few empty tables and as soon as I got up and started playing I noticed 3 chicks came over and sat in my seat and at the table that my drummer and I were occupying. There were other tables to sit at. This forced me to have to sit with them when I was done. I tried to ignore them but they started conversation with me. When I was done playing the singer thanked me and the chicks started screaming (drunk of course) I thought I was in a dream somewhere. No one was screaming after any of the other songs that were played. So it was a nice ego boost after the humble pie I was eating watching the band play. Luckily I am old enough to somewhat understand what is going on.
So a good night it was and I was not nervous at all once I started playing. I just wish I knew more of their set list so I could have played for a few more songs. Homework..........

There is no such thing as a partial baptism. You're either all in or all out. As you say, your "cherry is popped" and you can't get it back. There will never be another first time. Glad that it went well for you.

Unless they were completely heinous, I can't see what your problem may have been. You must learn to embrace the screaming drunk chicks, Grasshopper.

One of the best things to come out of this is that I am developing a friendship with the bass player/lead singer of the group who has now become sort of a "mentor" to me.
Tonight they are going to be working on some new material and have invited me to come up an bring my bass. I think this go a long way towards improving my skills. For this I am grateful.

Yes, we are not that far apart so I am thinking the same rules apply with summer teeth and everything else. There are areas in outlying remote locations that are beyone summer teeth.

If it helps, you may picture me in my underwear. Edit: Oops, just noticed the date. You may NOT picture me in my underwear.
Made me laugh. Hard.

Apparently someone in the audience captured us during my first time ever on stage with a band. Cool!!
Staring at the fretboard of course.
