Check it out, you solo cats
A small wooden structure with a pick up inside, so guitarists can tap their feet to produce a booming percussion sound - like amplifying the sound of your foot tapping on a wooden stage.
... it's a portable amplified floor. Rather than stamping on the thing though, Ellis suggests tapping your foot on the edges and corners. Indeed, applying a little restraint to your stomps is not only of course easier to control, but yields a better sound, giving each tap some room to 'breathe' without a heavy boot thudding down and stopping vibration".
I've seen one of these things in use, and it is definitely an accent to the type of styles you see small acoustic acts do.

In the 70s we hired a solo cat to warm upfor Zappa. He showed up with a 58 wrapped in a bunch of sox. He stepped on it like a kick drum. Worked great. Any old cheap mic will do.

On my Eric Clapton Box Set (no rotten fruits or veggies please) there is an out-take from a session that he was recording with Duane (I believe it was Duane, one of the) Allman.
It was Eric, Duane and a hollow wooden floorboard or box or something, nothing else. Killer blues sound. I forget the song, but if anyone's real interested I'll dig it out for ya'.
PS: No idea what was mic'd or not.
Edited by Dave da Dude (06/04/08 09:39 AM) Edit Reason: add PS

There've been a few such floorboards, porchboards, etc. marketed before; but the first one I ever saw and heard that was anything like that, was a home-made job that this guy had rigged-up for himself. It actually sounded great, he had really worked on getting it to sound just-right...

We've had a few threads on this product... I've always wanted to try one but haven't seen one up close.

Well, it would sure be easy for someone like you or I to clamp a foot pedal to a piece of 1x6 with some moleskin, or a Remo practice pad, and clip a lav or a cDucer to it.

Come to think of it, I have an extra electronic drum pad a buddy of mine built from a Rubbermaid plate, surplus rubber and a sandwich of a piezo doorbell buzzer element and some cardboard. If it works I expect I could remove the rubber and replace it with some wood. Hmmm.....

I couldn't find my Eric Clapton Box Set, but I found the song on another ("Pure Blues" compilation CD). It even mentions it being on the box set. It IS Eric Clapton and Duane Allman, "Mean Old World" by Walter Jacobs, time 3:51 Yeah, a long one with nuttin' but two acoustic guitars and the box or whatever it was. I know in the box set I have it specifically mentioned that was all they had, the two gits and a box or floorboard or something like that.
Recorded, Miami, Florida, October 2, 1970. Originally on Polydor 835 261-2, "Crossroads" (mine is on the new box set).
From the text with the "Pure Blues" CD: "Slowhand and the great Allman Brothers lead guitarist do an acoustic turn on blues harp master Little Walter's song. An outtake from the Layla sessions, this track is taken from the popular Clapton box set "Crossroads". .... .... ...."
When I first got that CD (before the box set) I used to listen to that song again and again and .... AWESOME for just two guys and a box.
So I guess I'm recommending that thing that started this thread... but not sure why a plain ole' wooden box wouldn't do.
