I just got a guitar off eBay that arrived today, and the 9th fret on the bass side is sticking up above the fretboard... literally above, so there's space between it and the fretboard below. You can push it down with your finger, but of course it just pops back up when you let go.

I'm guessing the only remedy is to take the guitar in to a tech and have them glue the fret down or replace the fret. I was curious if anyone had any idea how much something like this would cost. Thank you.

Not sure what it costs, but did you know this before you bought it?

They might want to do a complete fret file and setup which would be in the $175 range.

what make/model? any pics? you might want to by a re-fret kit and attempt it your self if it's not worth much and just a deal you picked up? If it's a guitar of value... then what Caprae said =)

Have seen them re-fret kits go for about 5 bucks and you can get fret luthier kit for about 25 if your up to trying it yourself and once again it's not an expensive guitar.

It's a Switch Wild IV, which means they don't make it anymore, and it's in otherwise good shape and sounds nice. But really, $175 for one fret? That's harsh. Oh and no, I didn't know it before buying the guitar. The eBay seller didn't mention it at all.

Sounds like I should just be calling the local guitar shop and seeing if they can give me an estimate or point me in the direction of a guitar tech.

If you get (or just read) Dan Erlwine's book, he has no problems with sticking frets down with superglue.

Should take you about 3 mins. (Don't stick your fingers to the fretboard \:\) ).

I think I wasn't clear. Many shops won't do just one fret, they will want to do a complete fret level and recrown and polish and set up the whole guitar. For this guitar the others are right in that you should seek other avenues.

You should also go back at the seller and ask for some of your money back for sending a faulty instrument.

To be fair, that fret might have come loose- or looser- during shipping. Maybe; it's possible... Combine climate-change with being bounced around and shaken up, and it isn't hard to imagine that happening to a used instrument...

I'd do some research, and fix it myself. If the frets are'nt too inconsistent, it should be feasible. (That book recommended above is a VERY good one.)

That's exactly what I was thinking, Geoff. I wouldn't think twice about doing it. Dan's book is invaluable to someone who wants maintain their guitars themselves. I constantly refer to mine copy.

BTW, I would even copy that particular part of the book for you and email it to you if you want to explore that option. Just let me know and I will get it done and sent to you.

I think these have composite fret boards and bodies.

This particular model has a rosewood fretboard. The Wild IV Signatures and the Stealth Wilds have a composite ebonite fretboard.

I called my local guitar shop and they have a tech guy that works with them. I was able to speak with him and explain the situation to him, and he said that it's not that uncommon with bound fretboards, and like has been said here, he also said it's not that uncommon when shipping a guitar to have this happen due to climate changes and the rigors of shipping.

He said he'd charge just $25 to take care of it, with a turnaround of a week so he could take it back to his shop. Normally I'd be all for trying to do it myself as I do want to increase my knowledge in this area, but considering they don't make this guitar anymore I'm being extra careful and would rather have it done professionally.

That Dan Erlwine book that's been mentioned sounds interesting though. What's the name of it? I'd like to pick it up too.

AAAAAAHHHH.... That would make weather and climate a lot less influential there...

That's true, it apparently would, except as I mentioned before this particular model still has a rosewood fretboard. The other models are the ones with the composite ebonite fretboard.

If the fret is popping up. the slot is most likely now over sized. The same size fret will do the same thing.

Get a piece of hard wood and cut it to the width of the fret. Another piece of soft wood for the back side of the neck. Get COMMERCIAL grade 2 part epoxy, fast setting. Use it sparingly. lay a thin line of epoxy in the slot, line the fret up and put it in. Take a c clamp or better, a rubber clamp with the triger for tightening. Put just enough pressure on the clamp to put the fret in place frimly. Set over night.

Once the fret is put back in....a fret dress is REQUIRED if you want a decent playing instrument.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I'm glad I'm not going to the guitar tech your brother went to then. All I can go by is what the local guitar tech himself told me.

I'm not disputing that he knows what he's talking about. Once again, I'm simply saying what the local guitar tech said. And considering he's been working with the guitar shop for a very long time and therefore must have successful and satisfactory results, and considering he's the one who's here, and considering he's the one I'll be giving my money to, I have to go with what he says when it comes to how much something is going to cost.
