I don't know much about the newer Samick guitars. I have an SAT650 (335/Sheraton II clone) and I love it. I have seen the AV series in stores but didn't pick one up for some reason. I've played a few others, and I was impressed too. I think they make good stuff for the price.

What actually got me started on Samicks are the older ones (pre-Greg Bennett).
I have played the MB's and the LP copies. Both played nicely, but the PUP's are candidates for swapping. Since I love to modify (as much as my budget allows), I don't mind buy a good-playing axe with less-than-great PUP's.
The PUP's in my Royale semi-hollow were Duncan-Design and did a pretty good job. I put SD Phat Cats P-90's in there, and now I just can't get enough of this guitar going straight into my Peavey Classic 30. It's a killer sound. The neck PUP is my least used PUP however the clean is really nice. Positions 2 and 3 are pure rock.
Here's my mental picture to describe what position 3 sounds like - are you ready for this? - if you pick up a handful of gravel and through HARD it against a cynder block wall and THAT could somehow make a sound where you could hear every pebble make a sound like a guitar string to create a guitar chord, that's what it sounds like... to me. OK, it's strange.
Regarding Samick build: I've always liked it. Now with Bennett designing, it takes it up a notch. Good wiring and pots. Not boutique I'm sure, but much above entry-level. Cool engineering ideas.
I've never had issues with playing Samicks (we have a large store in town that sells mostly Samicks). Some play less-than-inspiringly, but they never fall apart like entry-level Epiphones have in my experience.
If you can get a good-playing guitar cheap: buy and modify.

Don't know about Samicks, but I've played a few decent Korean Corts lately.

I have a Samick bass that, after comparing with a Fender P bass at the store, came up the winner and went home with me. It quickly became my favourite bass guitar.

I have a Samick acoustic bass (Greg Bennett Regency) and if their acoustic guitars are as nice as this bass then they must be pretty good.

I own a JZ-4 which I bought used off of E-bay. The previous owner had better pots installed and a Kent PUP along with a better bridge. I think it's a terrific guitar, esp. for the price (I paid $600 for it).
