Along the lines of part-timer's "how many" thread, does anyone gig with more than one amp? Either in your set-up or carry one as a backup. I've got a 2nd amp, but haven't taken it with me on a gig yet. I don't feel that I need to, but probably should, just in case something happens. I'd sure hate to get stuck with nothing. You can at least finish a song with a broken string, but you'd have a hard time doing it with a broken amp!

I used to use two amps, with one set dirty and the other clean, then use a stereo volume pedal to pan between them and blend the sounds as needed. Then the dirty amp broke, so I just cranked up the clean one!

I guess I have been living on the edge! I have always brought just 1 amp to a gig - never had any problems. Even so, it would always be good to have a back up!

I always bring a spare. Always. We generally only have 45 minutes to an hour onstage, so I don't have time to try to sort out what is wrong. If one won't go, the other one gets the call...

Hmm. Maybe in a band situation, with limited funding (doesn't happen too often, does it?), it may be good to have a bass amp that does guitar OK as a back up? For instance, my son's Peavey bass amp does guitar OK. It wouldn't be a tone-master, but it'd get through a gig in a pinch.

I've never had an amp go out on me, but I don't push amps too hard.

I carry one of those Crate Bricks (150W@8Ohms) - it can step in for either bass or guitar - not great, but gets you through the night.

Two amps....Marshall 100W JCM 800 with a power amp input mod and a Fender Twin Reverb also with a power amp input mod. I would run into a rack with an ADA MP-1 midi programmable pre-amp and the outs would go to the amp power amp in's..."stereo" kinda. The nice thing was I would have a solution if one amp went down.

Never ever did though.

Two Blues Juniors, running in stereo. If one conks out, I can use the other. I also have a Line6 POD X3 Live for effects. In a real emergency, I could go direct. Haven't ever had to do that.

Since my main duty is manning the keyboards, I don't bring a guitar amp. I have a modelling/effects pedal, run it through my stereo keyboard amp, and out to the P.A.

I never had an amp go. I either used my JTM-45 or an ADA MP-1, Quadraverb, and QSC SS power amp.

But if you kept a POD as a backup, you wouldn't have to schlep another amp just in case...unless you like to schlep 2 or more amps!

Yeah, that's why I tried out my first 1/12 combo.
I bought an inexpensive Carvin Nomad a little over a year ago and it was too easy to grab and run or to keep as a spare.

In the past, I have used two - 2/12 combos either in stereo or mono.
It's a helluva sound and if they from different mfg's, have a full sound.

But, I liked the 1/12's so much that I am now getting a pair of them to run in stereo.
We've got some great gear to choose from nowdays. \:\)

I've currently got 5 amps, back in my band days I used to use a splitter and run two at once on stage. One set clean and one with footswitchable distortion, that was my favorite sound, it was gritty but you never lost the guitar sound. I never had an amp quit on me, on stage or anywhere.
