My son has a Squier Mini Strat (this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Squier-Mini-Strat-Electric-Guitar?sku=510421 ) that a cousin gave him and I'm restringing it for the first time. What are these things tuned to? I know that its not A440 because of string tension. Anyone know?

You can tune it up to A if you want but I would recommend putting heavier strings and keeping it in std tuning for your son. 10s or 11s will have enough tension to keep the tuning and will be easier to play for a kid when in normal tuning.

I just got done putting 10's on it, and was fixing to tune up. I'll go with standard tuning. Thanks, Rhino. For some reason, I was thinking that you had to tune down a step or two. But now that you mention tuning up to A, it makes sense. My thinking was backwards. Thanks again.

You'd still tune "to A-440", just not the standard E-A-D-G-B-E (low-to-high) tuning.

Like the Rhino says, you could use medium to heavier strings and tune it to standard E-A-D-G-B-E, or, tune it up to "A" (A-D-G-C-E-A, low-to-high) tuning, with 9's or those 10's.

For ringin', rootsy 'n' bluesy stuff, slide, 'n' general Keefery, ;\) I bet that little guitar would do very nicely for Open-A or Open-E (E-A-E-A-C#-E and E-B-E-G#-B-E, respectively), or their relatives up a whole-step, B and F# (F#-B-F#-B-D#-F# and F#-C#-F#-A#-C#-F#, respectively), depending on what gauge strings you used... !! \:D

Something tells me that you'll be wanting to stick with either standard or std. up a 4th ("A" instead of "E") here, though! \:D

You're very welcome Greg. Std tuning also makes it easier for Dad and Son to play together.

I hope your son likes the Mini even if it's not a square Guitar. \:\)

Hey, Greg- how is that mini Strat? I'm awfully tempted to get one for myself- especially for THAT price; I bet it'd be a lot of fun... Is it any good as a guitar beyond being smaller and having a shorter-scale length?

We've had it for a while now, but I really haven't messed with it much. Kyle messes around with it ocassionally. He broke a string on it the other day, so I figured that it was time to restring it and give it a good set up. He asked me earlier today after I got it done if I would give him lessons! After I strung it up, I played it for a little bit and its really, for what it is, not too bad of a guitar. It seems to stay in tune (although a good set of tuners is probably not far off for it) and the intonation is really pretty good. I think that it will be a great guitar for him to learn on. I wish I had thought about bringing it with us on vacation. It would easily fit in a carry-on and I wouldn't have had to spend all of this week working my calluses back up! I'll remember that the next time we go somewhere! For $99, its a fun little guitar and it really plays like a real guitar, not a toy.
