WOW!

Anyone else checking out the news coverage of the ongoing fire?
Last time I saw smoke like that was when the Exxon refinery went up in Elizabeth, NJ back in the early 70's!

Yeah, I'm watching that now.
They also said that some film archives are there.
Do you think they're going up in smoke or they're in fire safe places?

Helluva fire.

Just finding out now from you!

No injuries so far - that's good.

Yes...they have said a few times that miraculously, no one was caught in it up to this point.

Boy...must be some serious history there going up in flames! \:\(

I can see the smoke plume from my balcony.
Sets can be rebuilt, but it's tragic to think what history might have been in that film vault. The smoke is getting a bit grayer, less thickly black, so I hope they have a handle on it.

Yeah, the old films were the best.
It'd be a shame to lose them. \:\(

I just filmed on New York street a couple weeks ago. I was there for a week. Because I had to drill into the structures and rig to them I had noticed how dry it was. Supposedly NY Street is gone...hopefully we don't need to do reshoots! We blew up a car there.

I this fire got around any Special EFX stuff that could maybe account for the explosions.

I applied for a job at the film vault about 12 years ago. I would imagine that the real blockbuster gems are stored elsewhere but I could be wrong. It may be old B movies and stuff....like I say not sure about that.

Film that is archived is usually stored in climate controlled vaults, these would be modern structures I am sure, steel and concrete surely.

I seem to recall the vault building I went to years ago at Uni was a modern structure. The backlot is old and there is a lot of wood.

This is a real shame, glad no injuries so far.

Hopefully they will be able to quickly/fully recover from this disaster, so that it doesn't seriously impact the movie-making livelihood of all the different crews that use those lots/buildings.

They said that most of those buildings were very old, and made from heavy lumber...which is what accounts for the huge flames (along with whatever chemicals where in the buildings).

I can't believe they're going to open the park at noon after all the warnings about the hazardous fumes & smoke. Then again,as a former USH employee who was there for 11 years(crowd controller) and was there for the '89 fire as well as the Northridge quake,I can believe it. God forbid they lose $ for a day.......
I'm really bummed at all the history lost...that's such a shame~I loved the Back to the Future Courthouse area and was there for a couple of special events. It was just cool to be where Hollywood history happened....One of the Employee Christmas Parties was held at night on the lower lot & that was fun-fake snow & everything!

Sounds like the film vault has gone up in flames according to recent reports, but everything in it (according to Universal sources) has duplicates stored elsewhere. I hope that's true. Since Universal owns all of Paramount's films before 1954, it would be doubly painful to learn that both Universal and Paramount had films in the vault and they were now lost.

Got to walk the courthouse square when I lived in LA. A real pity it's gone. \:\(

I would bet that. I thought there was a way deep underground vault somewhere in another state where this stuff was stored. It is so valuable no way it was kept in a facility that would burn down in two seconds.
