I agree about the Doobies. Just incredible writing, playing and singing.
I saw them last year at Jones Beach. They still rock!
"What a Fool Believes" is not my favorite tune, but a well produced track nonetheless. I just love "Black Water" and have played it out in a duo or band situation many times.
While I have had several Doob's albums and all, and while I don't mind MM's vocals as much as my old mate the good Doctor Ell ...I have never really figured out who plays most of the rhythm guitar parts. I must say that whoever came up with those parts is a fricken rhythm genius. Was that Skunk? I know there was more than one guitarist, right?
I have said it before, very underrated.........new players could learn such a lot from some of those chops. 1/16ths chukka's going like a freight train, chord stabs thrown in all the right places....in a way helped define the sound of the band..... along with the melodies and harmonies of course
Skunk Baxter came onboard the Doobs after Tom Johnstone left. Baxter was only on a few albums. Maybe even just one or two. Michael McDoanld era. (not my favorite era)
Simmons played most of the early rhythm with Johnston playing and singing lead.
Simmons is a pretty good damn lead player too!
I was State side a few years back and caught a Doobs concert. The lineup was mostly original with Johnstone back up front and a great sax player.
Great American band that was all original.
ps - And I still want to know who played banjo on Listen to the Music
