On our way to Southern California for vacation, we have a very short layover in Dallas at about 8:00 a.m. My wife takes the little one to get us some McDonalds for breakfast and I take Kyle (our 7 year old) to the bathroom. As I'm walking this guy in black pants and jacket, a long beard, and a funny little hat walks right by me. I stopped and told Kyle that is Billy G, the guy in ZZ Top. I've got his book, "Rock-n-Roll Gearhead" and Kyle loves looking at the cars and guitars. So we walk up to where he's sitting and I said hi to him and told him that Kyle really likes his book. Kyle says that his favorite guitar in the book is the "rectangle" one. Billy laughed and gave Kyle a pick! When we walked off, both of us beaming, I saw Frank & Dusty walking up. We get back to my wife and she's asking what we were doing over there. I told her and she was like, whatever, did you get a picture or autograph? I'm not much of an autograph hound, but I thought, what the hell, I'll ask him for a picture, better yet, a picture with Kyle. We all go back over to him and I ask if he minded taking a picture with Kyle, he said "step right up". Frank, Dusty, and the few others there were all smiling and laughing. Then to top it all off, my wife is watching "American Idol" and there's ZZ Top on TV. Kyle thought that was about the coolest thing ever seeing the same guy that he took a picture with on TV. Here's the picture:

VERY COOL! That sort of thing always makes time in an airport totally worth it. It's also incredible cool your son knows about ZZ Top and it was meaningful for him.

Kyle collects picks, so getting a pick was about the highlight of that day, but when he saw them on TV later in the week, he thought that was about the coolest thing. I would have liked to talk to him a little more, but he seemed kinda busy on his computer, so I didn't want to bug him, and we didn't have much time at all to get to our connecting flight, so we had to rush...and traveling with a 7 year old and a 1 1/2 year old isn't exactly a walk in the park. It was a great vacation, tho.

That's pretty appropriate for a lay-over in Dallas.

How Texan! \:D

And the first thing I notice is the Macbook...ugh!

I think that is the first picture I've ever seen of him with his glasses off. I can see him next year on the first day of school.

"And what did you do on your summer vacation, Kyle?"

"I discussed cars and guitars with Billy Gibbons."

I was looking at the picture again with my parents and noticed the same thing about his glasses.

He's probably the only one in his class that even knows who the Reverend Billy G is!! \:D As soon as I pointed him out and said who it was, Kyle recognized him immediately from the book. It was a great start to a great week!! Now back to work tomorrow... \:\(

It was a peso, right? \:D

(I read an interview with Billy in an ancient issue of Guitar Player where he said he used a peso for a pick, and it gave him a "spanish" sound).

Very cool picture. I have met a couple of famous people in airports but I never had a camera with me.

I flew from London to Hong Kong sitting next to George Harrison. I have several autographs, some great stories and memories but no pictures.

Even with the beard and hat I don't know that I would have recognized him without his sunglasses. No wonder he wears them; those warm, gentle eyes wouldn't do a thing for his bad-ass image!

Fun!

Wow...that is too cool. \:\)
Not like the Pat Benetar incident. ;\) \:D

Hey, put that pic and pick in a shadow box and put it on the wall.
Billy Gibbons is one of my all time favorite guitar heros since the early 70's.
I would've been to chicken to walk up to him, but the kid could get away with stuff like that. \:D

Gibbons actually looked very happy.
That's the kind of stuff I like to see. \:\)

THanks for sharing.
