How many of you are there in the band? Is there a bass player? Singer? Keys? Or is it just you waiting for everyone else to come to practice?

My drummer does this thing called "work" (has two jobs, in highschool by the way) and like never shows up to practices. And my other guitarist is in jail (but getting out soon) for skipping jail for punching some other kid (yeah, you can go to jail for school fights now! BS.)... so any suggestions?
Well, the drummer isn't around... so find that kid your guitar player got in a fight with and punch him out. While you and your other guitar player are sitting in jail you can write material to play when you get out. Everyone wins.

Ryan,
It sounds like you are in your teens. Keeping a band togther in secondary school or University is tough. It sounds like one of your band mates 2 jobs are to improve his $ situation. Maybe for University.
I remember trying to keep a band together. It takes a lot of looking and luck to find members who are committed to making a career playing and not as a hobby. There are a lot of older players who have established careers that have allowed to have bands as a hobby.
You have to decide if you are going to make it a career or a part time thing. I was a teen that thought he would be a great musician and have a band that had gold albums. Over the years, members came and went and I went to University and started a career and have played on and off to keep my musical interests happy.
Time has a way of making decisions for you. It is great when the band starts of as mates but to put a serious group together, sometimes you have to bring in people you do not know.
Good Luck
PS - I would have been behind bars for years if getting in fights in my teens was against the law. That is messed up.

I've got a zero-tolerance policy on crap like that, particularly with new guys that I haven't worked with before.
Miss a rehearsal? You're out. I have no interest in your excuse. Everyone has problems, but we all found a way to get there on time. If you don't respect the band enough to make a similar effort, that's it.
Obviously the same goes for a gig.
Someone above said "unreliable people will stay unreliable". That's exactly right. You either have "pro attitude" or you don't. Don't waste your time with them.

Am I the only one who thinks the above statements are flat out wrong?
Why is it if someone punched you on the street they would be charged with assault but the two of you believe the same is "boys being boys" if it happens in a school??
Maybe if people took assaults in schools more seriously we wouldn't have had incidents such as Colombine H.S., etc. where the beaten come back with guns and take out their anger and frustration on anyone and everyone they can, usually before ending their own lives.
You can say these incidents don't lead to such problems often but I'd say they lead to bigger and bigger confrontations, even if they don't become all school tragedies.
As far as I'm concerned I don't want violent people, male or female, allowed to roam the halls of my daughter's school with some slap on the wrist for attacking another student.
And maybe you wouldn't have been in fights at school, Part-timer, if you or your nemesis' had been arrested for violent, illegal activities the first time.
Sorry for the rant but I just can't fathom why anyone would defend violent criminal behavior in schools. I'm all for common sense in anti-violence policies in the school (ie: kids bringing a "spork" to eat lunch, etc.) but there is little gray area when one student physically attacks another, IMO.

I wouldn't go so far as "ZERO" tolerance, but clearly you can't let everything slide, either! Were someone to miss a pracice, I'd say, "OK, but you can't make a habit of it."
Missing a gig is worse, of course. You'd better have been in the hospital or getting married... in the latter case, come to think of it, the band would probably not have scheduled a gig, anyway!
Of course, in most church bands, the level of commitment is shaky. In fact I recently quit one because, although they did show up an hour before the performance to run through the tunes, it was too much to ask to practice even once a month apart from that. It's too bad, because these are talented people, and we could have really done a fine job!

In my experience, a good band is 98% commitment and reliability and 2% talent. I don't care how good you are. If you don't do your homework and don't show up (on time) to rehearsals, you are useless.

I tend to belive that if we let our kids play with toy guns and fight in school we wouldn't have incedents like Colombine. I'm not going to get into it, but ya... time for North America to toughen the *&%k up.

I don't think any generation has come up with a sure fire way to completely eliminate violence in schools. There is no (acceptable) deterrent that will make a juvenile think twice before acting out in aggression, what with their immature brains that are not able to make sound decisions (which is why the insurance companies can charge them more for auto coverage) and the whole "raging hormones" thing. The only thing we can do as a society is to try to make the punishment fit the crime, and both the punishments and the crimes have changed drastically over the years.
