I'm not a bass player and a couple of you might remember I picked up a cheap Ibanez bass a few months ago... Anyway, I'm workin' on this new intrumental and it's time to lay down the bass track...now on my guitars I play with my finger tips but on these damn basses (no offense to you bottom boys) I have to use the pads of my fingers, (plus those frets are so far apart) My problem is these strings are irritating the hell out my fingers... I know they make flatwound strings for basses... will those irritate my fingers as well? Sorry I posted here and not in the "Lowdown" but I sorta' know ya'll here...

Seriously, I'm not a bass player, but I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night..........

.....er, I mean, I do have a bass I play every now and again. I can think of two solutions;

-play more bass and build up those "bass calluses"
-for a change of pace, and to give your fingers a break, try a pick on that bass.

I can't wait to hear your new tune. Hey, what happened to the first one you posted?? I really really liked that one.

Get some nice smooth flats - NOT Rotosounds, they are still pretty rough - try D'Addario Chromes.

You'll get a less 'zingy' sound and the flats re-enforce the fundamental, so if it were a 5 string you'd get a better 'B'.

If you are after 'thump' you might like the seamless Rotosound 55s covered with black nylon and used by Sir Paul himself. \:D

(now you see why I posted in here... where else, besides a petting zoo or county lockup, can a person feel so much love?)
The pain or irritation is on my fretting finger pads... I use a pick. I was just wondering if the flatwounds were easier on my 'fretting' fingers...
The first tune I posted , that fumbles did such an awesome lead on' is still in idle... my old band mates changed it up a bit and wanted to add lyrics but I kinda wanted to leave it an instumental... We have a couple others that are just about done but we are doing this for fun... no expectations just for shits and grins...
Now... Holiday Inn and my face hurting aside, will the flatwounds help out or should I just tuff it out... (I really don't get alot of pleasure out of playing bass)
I love you guys more than a big sweaty man can... \:P

Both. Part of it is the winding, and part of it is those BIG strings. Maybe try a set of somewhat lighter-gauge strings, too, whichever type you get. You might not like the tone of the flatwounds and their ilk, though; Geoff makes some good points in his description of their respective tones.

Imagine what you'd want to hear for the bass-lines, real musical stuff, not just flashy "guitarist-plays-hot-licks-on-bass" stuff, but phrases that sound and feel like your favorite real, live high-caliber bassist laid 'em down; the kind that would make you want to playn guitar along with 'em. Then you'll get your creative juices flowin' in a different setting, and you'll begin to enjoy it more. Dream-up what John Paul Jones would've played if Led Zeppelin had a killer rocker called "Smart-@$$ Doctors Wrestlin' Gators 'n' Sharks"... \:D

I have one bass with flat-wounds and another with round-wounds...and I too don't play bass often enough to get those bass player's fingers/hands.

I tend to like the tone of the flat-wounds for more stuff...so I play them most times, and only if I play for many, many takes will I feel my fretting fingers getting a bit sore, but then, having switched to 11's...my finders/calluses have gotten pretty tough.
What happens more is that the hand/fingers get tired from pressing down on those big strings...but fight the urge to over-press. Use the lightest touch you can...other wise you will blow out your hand strength a lot quicker.

My tough time with bass was always the right hand...and in the beginning I use to use a felt pick...but then I got use to plucking with my fingers...and now I never use a pick.
Like I said...if I need to do many, many takes...my right hand fingertips will get a bit raw...especially when I am playing the round-wound strings.

There are two types of callouses. I always found that guitar callouses were hard and bass callouses were soft and leathery. The problem is, when you have guitar callouses, the toughness pressed into the bass strings causes irritation. However, I also always found that, given a few sessions, the guitar callouses would soften up enough for me to play bass. Although, then you'll find guitar strings to feel "sharp".

Eventually, your fingers will develop callouses that seem to work out ok with both, although they will always favour the instrument you play the most.

Long story short, you'll get used to it... \:D

I've been using TI Jazz Flats on Karen's bass (which I seem to have been playing more than she has ). They are really easy on the fingers, low tension.. but still have some edge to the sound. Also have Rotosound Flats on the Acoustic Bass.. They are pretty shite in comparison.

The Nylons are 88s, not 55s.

WOW!!! $35.00 for a set of strings? I have never priced them or even thought to ask how much they are... For the amount of time I play the bass they should last me a few years...
I'll give the Rotosound Flats a go though...

Yeah, I imagine that they'll last a long, long time, what with that covering (and the dark, round tone exoected of 'em, too). But I don't think there are too many other strings out there that will do quite what they will, if that's what someone wants- their options are few. It's quite a specialized niche, I'd think...

A friend of mine had a set of Roto Flats that were 15 years old - talk about thump?!!!!!

Probably difficult to see, but the Jazz on the left has a set of 88s on it.

Yeah, what Craig said. I find that when I play guitar, the thinner strings really cut into my fingertips. It's quite uncomfortable but after a week or so of playing guitar, it all works itself out. It figures that a a guitarist you would have the "mirror-image" of the problem.

And Geoff's right about the strings: with bass strings, the brightness one associates with new strings is not always desirable. Old strings just sound "thumpier" and that's not a bad thing at all.

Yup. Most bass players I know leave their strings on for a long time. Ask a bass player about the trick of boiling them in water and vinegar to a get another year or so out of them. ;\)

Oh... and vinegar?

I tried boiling the strings once, about twenty odd years ago, but found that it didn't really change things much. They certainly didn't sound "like new", they just didn't sound quite as old.

Maybe with the vinegar..? I certainly hope it works. Like smoking banana peels, it's one of those things that really ought to work.

Another way is to shake them in Methelated spirit (denatured alcohol). That seems to work - soak overnight & 5 mins of cocktail shaking \:\)

The idea is that it removes the crud (read dead skin) and crap that is gummed up between the winds thusly facilitating a fresher sound and at the very least making the whole process of playing bass a little less gross.

HEy RampDawg...you'll put yer eye out.
Armageddon...Armageddon! \:D

Yep, I have an Ibanez bass too for recording purposes.
A bass is a different animal all together, even if they are just like the top 4 strings of our guitars. \:D

I want to be able to use my fingers on my right hand, but right now, I'm not that coordinated. \:D
So for now...it's the pick. \:D

whether it's vinegar, or rubbing alchol, each is a solvent, that will dissolve all of the oils and skin debris, salt from sweat, etc., and should leave the string cleaner. I'd think that than might freshen up the sound a bit. But, I'm sure it's not quite like a new set of strings.

Don't bass players like the sound of older strings better than their sound when the strings are brand new???

Hey! A lot of well know bass players use a pick! There are quite a few styles that I prefer the sound of a pick in. It's more percussive and helps it "click" with the drums a little better.
