I would say it's a digital - sounds like a Roland to me, like 80's or 90's Roland kind of sound, maybe an MKS20

that's awesome
a bit campy in his mannerisms but hell, that's entertainment
this tour was over-the-top amazing, great sound (surround), incredible band (Bonnie Boyer singing backing vocals), Prince was huge at the time...no one had ever seen anything like it.

As per my own personal code of conduct, any thread started by a newbie poster that is 1 sentence with a link to something off-site is, far more often than not, a complete waste of time and serves to fulfill some sort of agenda the poster has. Therefore it gets ignored (the thread, and very often the poster). Given the feedback from the users of the forum whom I have come to trust, I think ignoring both is a safe route to go.
You can't be too hard on the noob. Let's analyze his sentence structure.
"boy bad. look"
It must have taken hours to come up with a the right three words which would provide a terse, yet descriptive analysis of the provided video. The use of the work "look" is an wonderous example of a simple yet precise directive which enticed the user community to view the link.
I'm thinking we may have a genious poster here who will have a tremendous impact on this forum for years to come. How many people here could have conjured a phrase as magical as "boy bad. look"?

When I first read this, I thought that you had made a typo. But with further consideration, I concluded that your statement as written is absolutely correct. The use of "look" is truly a great work! How could I have not recognized this on my first reading? Even Sven was deceived by this grand, yet economic writing style.
"Look" rhymes with "hook", making for a wonderful double entendre aimed at musicans. It will take weeks for this "look" to stop replaying in my mental studio. (Or looping, another double-"o" relative that was clearly intended.)
And the avoidance of the customary period, pure genius! Obviously implying that we should not stop looking until we too, reach, no, let me say approach, the level of understanding of the great communicators.

WOW, snobbery! Anyone who thinks its a waste of time to watch him play...or thinks he should get a restaurant gig?? .well, I dunno, everybody us entitled to their opinion.....
I guess what I'm trying to say is that people will pay money to see Prince play... he could do 1000 shows in a row in the same venue and people would still turn up every night, pay money, to be entertained by him...
How many of us could make the same claim?

Point remains that Prince is a showman who also delivers the goods from the instrumental and vocal performance perspective. Not to mention he writes his own material, and has written for many, many others, exceptional pop songs over his career.

I completely agree with the second part of your post  Thing is, 20+ years since that concert and people will STILL pay to see Prince...and probably 20 years from now too. Reason for this....well...the second half of your post sums it up.

Ok, you've guessed, I'm a fan, lol! Truly though, he's a genius. You see, I don't care if there are better piano players than him and I'm pretty sure he doesn't either. I'd say he was happy to snag Renato. However, there are not many who have made as much of a contribution to music as he has. He will go down in the history books. Personally, for this reason I would happily watch him play the harmonica for 5 minutes if thats what was on offer.

Mike, no matter what I write it will no doubt come across as condescending. I think if you expand your listening to include other piano players who might have a larger harmonic vocabulary, you might have a better understanding why you received many of the comments you did.

Personally, for this reason I would happily watch him play the harmonica for 5 minutes if thats what was on offer.
And make no mistake about it, he can rip on a harmonica.
I've yet to see an instrument upon which he couldn't play with excellence.
Virtuosity? No, Dave Horne, Prince is not a virtuoso pianist. But he's a damned good one, better than most in the pop/rock field, particularly when you put it in the context of a secondary instrument for him (guitar was always his first love)

Prince is an extraordinary multidimensional talent that few of us could hope to match on any one of several levels. I think that whether you enjoy his style of playing or not, people need to at least give him the credit for being as competent as he is in so many areas of entertainment arts.
And stop confusing entertainment arts with music, folks. It can be one, the other, or a nice mix of both as Prince provides.

Umm. Dave, have a read back through the thread. Where are all these comments that I received? I think if you "expand your" reading to include the entire post "you might have a better understanding why" you do come across as condescending to me.
Benifit of the doubt, Perhaps you're assuming that I am the original poster of this topic? Well I'm not. I just thought it strange that some people considered Prince a waste of time musically.
As for what I've listened to in order to compare piano playing with Prince?
Well, I was raised by two virtuoso musicians, my mother (Piano) and my father (violin). From as young as I can remember I have been exposed to great piano playing both from my own living room and to my parents extensive classical music record collection. I was rocking out to Pollini playing Stravinsky before I could tie my own shoes, I was sitting in the front rows of classical concerts since I was old enough to not burst out crying and have to be taken home. I'd say since the age of 4.
When I was 7 I got my first Oscar Peterson tape that started my love affair with jazz piano. Some of my heroes in that field would be Art Tatum, Oscar of course, Bill Evans, Keith Jarret etc. I did my first paid jazz gig when I was 14.
At the risk of sounding big-headed I am probably a better piano player than Prince. At the very least I mean I can probably do stuff on the piano that he can't. That doesn't mean I approach his talent, merely that I'm more proficient in that one instrument.
I'm not claiming to be the best player or a leading authority on all things music, but I do feel like my opinions are substantiated, much as I'm sure yours are too.
Sorry, I don't like being talked down to.
