Do you believe in magic?
OK. You may call it something else, and that's OK. But every once in awhile, stuff happens. Stuff that you just can't explain very well. Maybe it's happened to you.
For example:
You're playing a tune on piano and it sounds good. Maybe you composed the tune. Maybe you just did a bit of reharm or a new arrangement.
That night, you've got your band together and you're getting ready to go over the tune. Everybody's feeling pretty good, so you start. You may be set up to record the rehearsal - or maybe not.
Nevertheless, it's happened to me and I'll bet it's happened to you that the first time you hear that tune come together with all the parts played by the various members in the band - and perhaps you've added the harmonies - the first time you've heard it and what have you got?
Magic.
OK, I can tell by your faces that some of you don't believe me. Or you're wondering how you can get your hands on whatever you think I've been smoking.
But you know that, at one time or another, if you've played music long enough, this has happened to you.... when everything comes together... and the first take is the best... and the harmonies blend so sweetly it's like you're hearing angels.
Like I said, you may call it something else - luck perhaps... or synergy... or just a great vibe.
Question...
How do you replicate the magic? You can't bottle it up and make it happen any time you want. But how close can you come?
I realize that I'm going out on a limb here, but at any time in your musical career have you ever thought to yourself that what you just heard or played wasn't simply everything coming together - but there HAD to be a little something extra that made it so good?
Frankly, I'm a believer.
Ummmmmmm, I'm just asking for a reality check here but...
When did it happen for you?

Certainly yes.

I haven't figured out how to replicate it, don't believe it can be reduced to a bottled formula, but I have found that it helps to mitigate or reduce all of the countless things that so easily kill that ephemeral creative spark you're describing.
Stressing over my rig, interpersonal issues with band members, trouble at home - all that stuff screws w/ my head and certainly makes it harder for the lightning to strike. Getting as much of that put to bed doesn't guarantee the 'magic' will drop, but it increases the chances.
And quite frankly, I've found that the harder I work and the more disciplined I am in practice, the more frequently I'm blessed by the musical magic...or mojo, or angel voices, or whatever term you want to use.

My first gig after returning from my mother's funeral was one of those times. We went into some blues during the first set, and the grief just came out right through my hands and into the music. I was totally "in the zone" where I could almost see the colors like a painting. (No, I hadn't been smoking)
It was some of the best and most pure playing I've ever done, and I would love to figure out how to recreate it short of a parental funeral.

Oh yes master gasman... the magic has touched me and my mates. Sometimes it's a layoff that does it and sometimes it happens after back to back gigs. You never can tell, or recreate it exactly. But WHEN it happens.... it's better than sex... there I said it I did and it's true. The WOW factor when you have the kind of song/set/or night is outstanding. I wish I could have them every night but I guess it might not be appreciated if it happened all the time.

OK. I knew somebody had to do it. That cut and paste job was too easy, Stepay.
Mr. Nightime - thank you for your response. That's exactly what I was talking about. You never know when it will happen, but, on occassion there is something that you can only attribute to 'magic'.
Stepay... you can do better. Tell me the truth. Have you never been pleasantly surprised by a performance you heard or made, but couldn't put your finger on just why it came about?
Now go stand in the corner for the rest of the day and think about it.

Tom
edit: And Jim, I just saw your post. I hope we can come out to hear your band tonight at High-Park (what a name).

Yes I have. Just having fun on a Friday. The first time my former band played Eminence Front live, it was awesome, and the practices hadn't been so good. Love that song.

Sho' you right, Gas. The most memorable occasion for me was an opening number in a Motown show I did about 10 years ago: 'Dancing in the Streets'. That night it just worked, right out of the blocks. The band was grooving stupidly, and the harmonies were like I was hearing them in layers I'd never heard before. Afterwards backstage, when I asked the others if they'd also heard it, they concurred. Inexplicable.

It's just 'Truth' that has gotten loose! Only thing is you can't put it on a leash. That's why you really have to try an live it (someway). There are harder ways to live!
Magic is non-definable. Doesn't compute, ever notice it has a nature like that! Funny, even the definition of 'chops' breaks down on that level (magic)! I would say it factors into many cultures classical musics only of course by then it's already been over defined. I like to think of Magic as an ancient universal 'constant'!
You can't go to collage and get a degree in magic unless your Harry Potter though

I get this every once in a while when I pull a solo. Most of the time I think about them too much, but sometimes.... I remember the first time was in the early 90's. A band I was playing with did a biker bash, and naturally we had to play Born To Be Wild. I cut loose and it was like I was possessed. My whole band was doing the gaping pie hole at the end of the song. I've only done it once in the studio though, and it was a first take that we left alone. For sure there's many times that the whole band is on fire, but from a personal perspective, for me it doesn't happen all that often, but when it does, c'est de la magique bien sur.

I don't believe in magic.
I spent 20 years in a professional big band - that's all we did, play concerts. We would play our collective asses off on occasion - everything clicked and the guys in the band would all agree that something good happened ... and there was absolutely no response from the audience.
On other occasions we would play poorly and the audience would offer us their first born.
Magic, like most unmeasurable things, exists between the ears of the person who believes it exists.

I can't say that mt group has ever truly hit the 'magic'level. We've been playing on and off for about a year and a half, but it always seems like the first song we play after a week or two off is absolutley great.
I can sort of relate to this on a personal level though. Most days, I never really sit down at the piano and lay in and practice. Its just ten minutes here and there throughout the day, whenever I've got time or I'm bored of whatever else it was I'm doing. I never really feel like I've played anything particulary good when I improvise in these times. it always seems though, whenever I play when I've been up to late and am dead tired, and just force myself that one last little bit of practice for the night, I always play really well, very smooth and soulfull sounding. It's probably just that I'm tired and it sounds a lot better, but to my ears, I always play best when tired.

I think what ITGITC is saying is "magic" is the thrill of the moment linked to musical ideas coming together and/or inspiration. That's the definition of magic in this one context, and it happens. It's really the main thing that keeps me playing, and an audience may or may not be a part of it.

what has magic to do with the audience?
The audience did not perceive anything out of the ordinary, so did anything really happen?
I remember an incident from my high school days. I was a music major and everyone had to perform before the class. I played the two part invention in F major by Bach. One of the music teachers from the school gave me a private lesson or two and I was given specific instructions on which line to crescendo, which line to decrescendo, which notes to play separated ... etc.
I played the piece and the girl in the class who was a kick ass classical player told me I played musically. Now, all I did was play the road map which was marked for me. The only emotion I had was fear. Magic and the perception of musicality exists in the ear of the listener and not necessarily in the mind of the performer. Sometimes it's the other way around.
.... it's magic.

that's true, everybody has each own magic. We're really playing for ourselves not for audience, unless we want earn some money all over sudden. Money means nothing, only magic matters.

I think it comes down to the freedom to make mistakes...improvising.....jamming....spontaneity...
I have a piano/keys trio I write tunes for...pretty simple type jazz tunes...i'll give them charts on the gig and then call them at some point....i swear the first time we do them they are always great...but to keep that freshness, it takes great ears and trust...

I call it when the magic happens in my brain or soul or band or wherever that place may be, and Dave Horne will appreciate this, 'all in a Blue Room'. I had this epiphany one night last summer playing with the Lonesharks. They are so rhythm and blues oriented, late 40's American R & B though. It was some deeper understanding of American music and song and harmony and rhythm. A real place, not abstract at all, very solid, tangible! A magical place all the time!
I agree with Sachimay though I think you have to work to keep the soil moist and ground fertile, even if it's no work at all. The old paradigm I had about Magic and my adult one I find to be a bit different BTW! Sometimes I miss the younger me's magic feeling , the more 'niave' one, the childlike one. I find the definition has grown a bit with age and what I expect from what kicks back to me from the music.
Alot of magic is about just being loose and open at the same time regardless of what type of music you play, just positive human life force at work not to get all new age-e about it! Very simple simple, and not what you or anybody else would necessarily think. That's what I find to be the amazing part of some of the things that happen! Definitely not what an audience may imagine is going on or how it feels subjectively many times when 'you' are experiencing something.

When I was reading this I recalled not an individual performance as such, but those moments which happen between experienced musicians when you just look up at another player and you somehow know where the other will go at the next split-second. I find that a hugely satisfying aspect of performing in a group.

Yes. I have experienced what you are talking about, Tom.
I don't like to talk about it much, really. It's a thing that happens in the moment. When the moment is gone, the thing is gone. It is fantastic when it happens, but talking about it seems quite unlikely to make it happen. Plus I don't really feel like being set up as the straw man for every whack pseudo-science idea on the 'net, and shot down.
Words Bad. Music Good.

Tom,
I have experienced what you are talking about as well. I think this also happens in so many other apsects besides just playing. It happens in composing, it happens when your alone, playing, it happens when you sometimes just thinking about things regarding music ect. Magic is a cool thing because it's such a special feeling and can create so manny different wonderful feelings and positive things. Unfortunately for me I haven't felt magic with the keyboards in some time. I do not however lay blame on anyone but myself, because my work ethic as of late has been lacklaster.

Yup.
Good thoughts here.
Perhaps I could have used another word besides 'magic', although it was a great thread-starter.
Nevertheless, it's a wonderful thing when music comes together and the sum total is something more than you imagined it would be.
Music is cool.

One of these rare, magical instances on my end involved a degree of emotional convergence. Our guitar player of ten years, Jimmy, was leaving the band. Jimmy was a great guy and we all shared some fantastic musical and nonmusical experiences together. On the eve of his "last job” with us, while I was at home getting ready for the gig (we had already set up and I came home to wash up), I went over to the piano and loosely composed a piano intro to one of the songs he and I wrote together. So at the gig before we did this song, I said on the microphone something like, "Jimmy, I'm not sure where this is going start or where it's going to end, but this one is for you." I played for about 4-5 minutes, some of it following the chord structure I composed, some of it extemporaneous inspiration. The music seemed to be flowing through every cell in my body. I couldn’t see too much of the crowd due to the spotlight; in fact, the only substantial visual recollection I have is a silhouette of Jimmy standing across the stage and the members of the band that opened for us standing to the side of the stage. Brought down the house to a thunderous applause. While I subsequently refined this piece into what I refer to as a “piano concerto” (although I’m sure it fails to meet this criteria on a number of levels.....), I probably have not played anything like that since. Pure rapture.

I cannot imagine good artist who doesn't believe in magic, when it comes it makes your life meaningful.
I've seen/heard it happen between players a few times while mixing FOH and it was like time stopped and the stage glowed. Absolute harmony on stage. Better than any high I can imagine. That elusive magic is the holy grail that keeps me learning to play and seeking opportunities to play with others. Makes the journey that much more enjoyable when you have a little taste of what you're looking for. Mark

When I was reading this I recalled not an individual performance as such, but those moments which happen between experienced musicians when you just look up at another player and you somehow know where the other will go at the next split-second. I find that a hugely satisfying aspect of performing in a group.
agreed, grupensex is always better...
