... or you will end up buying one, as I did this morning.

I only meant to try one over - truly - but from the first touch of THAT action I was a lost man. The credit card floated out before my eyes.

Seriously, this is a superb piano and an ideal balance for me between the slightly darker Roland piano sounds (which I love) and an action I can really dig into. The ivory-feel keys are fantastic and so far I'm finding myself loving the new Expressive Grand, despite some concerns posted here.

The EPs, I think, will need a bit of work, as I like a bit of dirt in my Rhodes and Wurli sounds.

The only slight worry is the increased schlep factor, but I now have a car which loads right in flat at the back and with a soft case with wheels on I should be able to save most of what remains of my vertebrae.

LOL - congrats on the new board! I have been going back and forth on it, because I know I love the action and the piano sounds are great IMNSHO, but we don't really have the budget for it right now. However, a certain online retailer has 12 months no interest & no payments, which makes it very tempting...

Enjoy it!

Tell me about it! Good for you Aidan!! I am intrigued by your suport for Expressive Grand.. the more people say they like it,the more I think something may be wrong with my GX... I find the sound just a bit hard on the ears... whereas the Ultimate (which when edited, is my new love) and the Superior just sound out of this world with that action..

I can't stop playing the damn thing,,, and I'm meant to finish my PhD this month... jeez..

Congrats Aidan...

I might be close to pulling the trigger myself.
I am ready for a change from the P120...it's really a drag to try and play on that thing these days. I haven't owned a Roland keyboard since I sold my JP8 back in '86.

Here's what happens with the RD-700GX and me just about every night these days. I am ready to go to bed, typically not having had much time for music with busy family and work commitments tying me down on weekdays. I wander past the 700GX and say, "Ok, I'm just going to play for a moment and then go to bed." 45 minute later, I am "lost" in the sound and the action, usually just playing around with some introspective new-agish riffs while layering new pads and stacking pianos. It really is a joy to play and makes me wish that my primary gig had more of a call for more piano-based songs - most of them use a salad bar hodgepodge of synths, leads, brass stabs, etc. with less on the isolated piano stuff. But I'll be happy to have my solo jam sessions with this thing for some time to come.

Would've been funnier if you'd put a comma after "keyboard."

I'd have said, "just like the rest of us."

Thanks guys - here's the new baby safely installed in the church, which is as far as it'll be going until the on-order gig bag arrives.

One thing I'm immediately appreciating is the ease of real-time manipulation and the way the zones are implemented. I've added a bit of grit to the EPs now and I'm pretty happy with the results. They're certainly not up with those on the Nords and the EPs on my Motif XS7 probably beat them too, but there's some useful and playable stuff in. Eric is right on about layering the pianos with pads - very addictive.

But for me it's still the action that's the absolute revelation - the ivory feel surface is a real help with accuracy and confidence in moving around the keyboard, so that I for one find myself playing far less conservatively than I might on a conventional, shiny plastic keyboard.

Are you monitoring from the back side of a single Mackie SRM-450 ?
I would add a SRX-12 card for the #1 Rhodes .

If you look in the pic you'll see a pole stand. The other Mackie is on top of that. I'm right at the top of the nave, above the choir stalls (which is what you can see behind the piano) and just adjacent to the high altar rail.

Because of aesthetics, it wasn't possible to pole mount the other speaker so it peeps out as shown. Also, because of access to the altar for communicants, it's not possible to have the speakers behind me. All less than ideal, but that's the reality of playing in old, listed churches where you can't just start ripping out the furniture!

Incidentally, for any UK guys interested, my FP-4 and CP33 are now listed in the Garage Sale forum.

I'm very tempted to get the new stand too.. its out in the UK in mid June...

Something I have noticed about the sounds is that the epianos in particular sound better over speakers than over headphones.. probably due to headphones providing greater fidelity and unmasking the various problems...

Moreso with the SRX-12 rhodes, which sounds really lovely over my hifi system... and since I found the amp models in the SRX (JC120, Twin et al) its nice to add a bit of bite, overdrive to them...

Is the response curve problem you were experiencing solved when listening over speakers too?

I'm using the Roland version of the V-stand which seems to work great - one of the advantages of having a heavier keyboard over the FP-4 is that the extra heft makes for a more solid experience on the V-stand.

Aidan,

How much better clarity do you hear when playing live with the RD-700GX's "Superior Grand" compared to the old FP4's Piano 1? They are both based on the same samples. I presume the RD-700GX's "Superior Grand" has a fuller, fatter sound, with more presence and nuance. I notice the FP4 Piano 1 sounds brighter, thinner, and less detailed.

A little yeah, I find adding some overdrive helps with the SRX Pure Epiano 1 sound.. the problem is that the softest velocities trigger a bright metallic tine rhodes and then strike a little harder there is a big jump.. I tried altering the keyboard setting to get increased velocity response from the get go and that works good too...

I reckon the SN epiano probably sounds as good through the speakers though.. I have a few duo/trio gigs coming up so will get to try it out properly.. Like Jazz+ attests to, I find rhodes easier on the ear in a gigging situation... I even used a ROland 300SX on a gig once and vastly preferred those EPs to its APs.. even though on headphones the APs easily outshine the EPs...

I am enjoy the Jazz 5 pattern (111) while playing.. would be tempted to use that pattern in a gig situation.. not so with the others.. the Audio Key feature might work nicely for that, but I'm worried about triggering loops accidentlly (which I've already done several times) if I go into flights of fancy on solo piano...

Hey HEY, meeee tooo
\:D

I tracked down, beat up FedEx last night and got my Rd700GX

The shipping carton was severely violated. The styrofoam was chewed up into little pieces. It appears Roland is doing a miserly job on packing

Fortunately the GX survived the journey from Wisconsin to here.

I spent about 20 minutes comparing the SRX12 EP's to the GX EP's. I am not sure I need the SRX12 with the GX. There might be a patch or 2 on the SRX12 that is nice to have. I am not counting Clavs in the comparison.
