Hello,
I won a poker tournament and its about time I buy me a good Gibson SG - I prefer the price would be > $2500.
I have found a used Gibson SG - the one with the title: RARE Beautiful Vintage 1964 Gibson SG Junior Guitar
It's got history and the few times I have tried to play a SG I loved it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, TDK

Well, if that's the kind you like, go for it. I'm not a big fan of the wrap-around bridges, or those tuners; and I'd prefer my SG to have 2 pickups rather than the Jr. But that's just me. SG's are great, especially when their necks have been played in for a while- new ones just seem a little too stiff to me right out of the box.
And i think your sign is off- you want to spend MORE than $2500? Or LESS than < $2500 ?

Hi TDK,
Couple of thoughts. I bought exactly the same guitar new(still have it in modified form) in about 1968. Here's the deal. It's built small. If you have big, meaty hands and a 'heavy' touch, don't bother as a serious player guitar. The necks are thin, and will bend out of tune if you breath on them. It is truly a 'junior' guitar.. what you might call a starter guitar. You're also limited to one sound.. the single P90. From an investor POV, probably a good deal. From a player POV, not so much.
As far as full sized SGs in general, they can have killer sound and natural sustain with the right PUs. If you can live without the extra tone control, I'd avoid the 3 PU models, as the more PUs involved the higher the magnetic pull on the strings(less sustain). Physical balance(how it sits when straped on) can also be an issue with the standard SGs.
Best, Paul

Thanks or the plug....
There's the little detail about not wanting to ship it, though...

I'd recommend the '61 reissue. The neck isn't as bendy as some SG's can be. How much do you know about the pick ups you prefer? I think the '64 you're looking at has one P-90, which is cool, but if I had to have one SG, I'd go for double humbuckers.
I also have to agree with staying away from the three pickup models... 2 humbuckers is enough.

Couldn't hurt to check out the new Gibson SG Diablo; what a cool guitar!
And if it's a great player guitar you want, and not necessarily a collector's-item investment or having to be a Gibson, U.S. Masters makes a killer SG-stylee called the Hornet, that's an enhanced and, in many ways, improved SG-styled guitar... They've got very solid, stiff, reliable necks on 'em, particularly compared to a Gibson SG; they're designed and constructed differently, though they look very similar.
I've gotta say, though, that the SG Jr sure looks like a no-frills, no BS rock 'n' roll machine! (Paully's warnings are correct, though.) Gotta be up there with Fender Esquires, LP Jrs and the new PRS "One"... Beautiful mahogany in that pictured guitar's body, too. That write-up on the auction-'page that the link leads to was written by someone who didn't know jack about guitars or how their (used/vintage) condition is rated...
