Hi all,
I'm considering writing a John Entwistle Bass Book. I've made a list of some of the songs I think would be good to include, but I'd be grateful for some input. I need to cut the list down to about 20, so let me know what you think is essential reading. Also, if I've forgotten anything, or if there's any particular song you think needs to be included let me know!
The Real Me My Generation Boris The Spider My Wife Dreaming From The Waist Won't Get Fooled Again The Ox A Quick One Call Me LIghtning The Kids Are Alright Sparks Pinball Wizard Substitute Heaven & Hell 5.15 Baba O'Reilly Success Story Who Are You Trick Of The Light The Quiet One You The Seeker Young Man's Blues Bell Boy Squeeze Box Behind Blue Eyes
Thanks Stuart

He is dead, you know????
Are you going to discuss his technique in this book?

Sorry, I forgot he was dead. He's such a big part of my life that he will always live with me.

I'm considering writing a John Entwistle Bass Book. Stuart - If you write it, I will buy it. Looks to me like you have a pretty good representation of John's work.

Thanks for the input guys. The book will be transcriptions, plus a detailed history, bassography, and technique breakdown. I'll keep you all posted as the project develops.
Cheers Stuart

I would definitely order it ! Will this only focus on his work with The Who or also his solo career? I don't recognize all the titles, hence my question

Stuart,
One of the more interesting aspects of Entwistle's playing was how he would take it out live. How some of those fills just seemed to explode out of him (in reality his way of keeping Moon on a shorter leash or so I've read).
Could be a neat idea to compare/contrast/analyze a transcription of a live performance against its studio counterpart.
Just popped into my head. Sorry.

Stuart,
I'd be interested in this book. My question is - what rationale are you using to pick the songs? Is there one theme for the 20, or are you picking songs to show certain qualities of the Ox's playing? Are you picking famous songs?
Some of my thoughts:
Young Man's Blues or Substitute (Leeds version) for the outrageous jam/trio blues rock thing. You could do both versions of Substitute to address DJR_Bos' point.
The Real Me isn't one of my favs, but you almost have to include it for bassists (I mean, bump said so) It's the "over the top, but somehow still works" song.
Squeeze Box is "I can be a cool bassist and play for the song" (if I ever try to learn guitar, I want to learn the electric part to this song - the "chop" chords are the best)
My Generation - how to solo
Who Are You - I think the part in this is more intricate than you realize at first.
Happy Jack - cool riff, plays in different octaves, different dynamics.
Odorono - great pick playing and walking.
Add others to taste.
I wanted to complain about the lack of songs from The Who Sells Out. I think that's a great album, but in looking at it the bass parts don't show anything that's not visible in other songs. (edit - added Odorono after further listening)
Tom

Great list of songs; I'd love to see "You" from Face Dances; and maybe "One At A Time" or "Cry If You Want" from It's Hard. And no solo stuff? Like "Dancing Master" (ok, dumb song, but his call & response bass solo is kinda cool) or "Mad Dog".
Anyway, he's one of my favorite, and I look forward to seing what you finally publish. Let us know when it's ready!

I don't care for the Who, but focusing on technique would be cool to read about too.
Thanks

Somewhere there is video of me playing "The Real Me" with Late September Dogs earlier this year. It was very near my birthday and we always do a "birthday song" in that band - something that we'll generally learn for one show. Last year it was Iron Maiden's "Wasted Years". I'll post it if I can get it from the dude who took said video.

One of my favourite 'Oo songs is "I'm a Boy" - the bass part is prob. nothing special (although it keeps this bass holder occupied), but I like the story of the boy trying to be a boy. My band has fun with it. Listen here http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=H_HbRQnPDPE

Hi Tom,
I am trying to come up with a good mixture of hits, and songs that show the kind of player Entwistle was. In response to your thoughts:
Young Mans Blues & Substitute are both going in the book.
The Real Me HAS to go in the book!
My Generation, Who Are You and Happy Jack will all be in the book, Odorono maybe.
Obviously all songs are subject to my acquiring the necessary copyright permissions!
More on this as it develops.
Stuart

Suggestion? See if you can get Pino involved somehow; like, writing the Forward?

And you need to include at least one song that he wrote, whether that's Boris or Heaven And Hell or whatever.
I've been playing a few of these. Squeeze Box kills me - tick-tack part mostly, and then plays the only riff for the ending. And I want to know what position he used for the riff in Happy Jack.
And don't be afraid to say that my suggestion of Odorono stinks (ha!!)
Tom
