Well, parts were recorded live at a concert I attended.

History, Mystery Check it out. Parts recorded live, additional studio stuff mixed in.

Bill made it out to Halifax's Jazz Festival year before last. I'm a fan, have all his CD's, but admittedly the show was a tad "out-there" for me. To be honest, I really just wanted to hear more of his guitar work! He took a back seat to the performers playing with him.

Looks like I'll be picking this new one up!

So, tell us about the show, Bill, and particularly your recollection of those tunes included on the CD!

It's not clear from the liner notes which tunes were recorded at which venues, and it's not a "pure" live recording. If I understand correctly, the live stuff served as a launch pad for some additional overdubbing and editing in the studio.

I thought I posted a concert review back in late '06, but I can't find the thread - maybe it was a different forum. Anyway, Greg Tardy is a terrific saxophone player. There is a level of interplay between Frisell's overdrive tones and Tardy's sax where they blend so well it's like the melodic lines pass seamlessly between the instruments. Frisell's clean tones often achieve that same effect interacting with the string players (violin, viola, cello) This is not a guitar star record, but the magic is in the interaction of all the instruments making the composition and arrangement and the actual sounds of the instruments one unified thing.

I think I'd like that; sounds good! I'll put that CD on my get-around-to-it list... Thanks!

AHA! Found my old concert review (November '06). It was on another forum I frequent.

 Quote:
With his "Unspeakable Orchestra", eight piece band (Guitar, bass, drums, +sax/clarinet, trumpet, cello, viola, violin)

Sax player (Greg Tardy) was excellent. We were told that the show was being recorded, so maybe some of it will show up on record sometime next year, which would be cool.

So after the show, we were trying to figure out a capsule summary of the music Frisell played with this group. Obviously it's rooted in jazz, but contains many other elements. There are certain songs where the band sort of plays an ensemble vamp, and each time around a different instrument does some subtle variation on their vamp line. This goes on for some while and sets a stage for one instrument to merge into an extended solo, while the others continue the rotation of more subtle variations. In some ways, it borders on creating a trance-like thing, but places the soloing into a broader context than outright jazz blowing.

So how to describe this to a non-musician? It's impossible to use one word like "jazz" or "electronica". The one word would have to be just "music"
