Which Squire Vintage Modified Should I Buy???

After a search on this forum for good beginner basses, it seems that the Squire Vintage Modified series gets very good reviews and is an excellent value for the relatively low price.
So I have to pick one... the Jazz Bass, Precision Bass, or TB Precision Bass. What are the big differences between these 3?
I've been playing guitar for 20+ years, have no experience at all on bass. My musical taste runs to hard rock. So I'm thinking the Precision.
Any feedback is appreciated!

I would go with the 70's Jazz. You get a little more tonal versatility than with the other 2. I rarely see the vintage precisions in stores, but I have played the jazz on multiple occasions and really think its a bargain. Plus I think it looks a lot better than the other ones

Welcome to the darkside!

I'd go with the choice above, to be honest my bday is coming u[p, and i've been lurking with the idea of getting a backup for my spector and that bass has been one of my first choices, i'm falling in love with jazz basses, and that would be a good startup. That or the Blue lakeland I saw yesterday at a music shop...drowl

The Jazz would probably be easier to get used to after playing guitar all those years. The neck is a little thinner and the string spacing not as wide as the Precision's. Is there a Fender dealer within a reasonable distance from you? Trying out a few would be a good idea, even if they weren't the Vintage Modified series, then you'd at least know which neck was more comfortable for you.

Can anyone attest to the difference between the wood used for this bass, the Mexis, and the Americans? I'm starting to wonder if it isn't almost 100% identical.

As I have mentioned in the past, I have a Squier VM P-bass... I like to think of as the Dee Dee Ramone bass. I also have a MIA Fender P-Bass.
The MIA bass has overall better fit and finish, and it's basically built like a tank. It's an awesome bass. Having said this, the Squier is also really, really nice and quite comparable overall. No, it's not the same as my MIA P-bass, and I'd never trade my MIA P-Bass for a Squier VM model... there are some notable differences in the quality of the parts, wood and the build. But, again, the Squier VM bass cost me $250, while my MIA cost about four times as much.
Bottom line for the OP: My vote goes for the VM P-Bass, but that's just because I happen to be a fan of P-basses in general, and I own one of the VM models. Good value, good bass, very playable and totally worth the investment.

Can anyone attest to the difference between the wood used for this bass, the Mexis, and the Americans? The Vintage Modifieds: P Bass-agathis body TB (Telecaster Bass) Precision- basswood (with some kind of veneer) Jazz- "soft maple" according to the Squier site.
MIM's are usually alder Americans are either alder or swamp ash(I think this depends on the finish, year, etc.)

I like to think of as the Dee Dee Ramone bass. Indeed. Much better that the Sid Vicious bass...

I own the fretless, but I've played all four. I am of the opinion that all four are very nice basses at twice the price. I don't think you can go too wrong with one of these.
...My musical taste runs to hard rock. So I'm thinking the Precision.... Sounds to me like you should get the Precision. Although you can play hard rock with a Jazz Bass.
Myself, if I were just starting I think the right one for me would be the fretted Jazz.

If you're buying it for me, get the fretless one.
If you are buying it for you, your basic decision is Jazz or Precision.
The Modified Precision TB is more like the original 50's Precision or the later Telecaster Bass. Don't get that one unless you really know what it is.
Play the two basses and see which one you like the sound and feel of or do a little search and find out how many of your favorite players play Jazz basses and how many play Precisions and decide that way.
However you choose, you'll get a decent bass for a low price.

Jeremy speaks the truth.
I like the Squier VM Jazz in the '70s flavour or the VM fretless, but you might prefer the P.
Play them all and grab whichever one you like the sound of. The Squier VM series are all great "bang for your buck". You've just got to choose the model you prefer.

Hey... thanks to all for the great responses. Exactly the feedback I was hoping for. Now its time to head to GC this weekend and play the Jazz and Precision.
Is it so bad if I use a pick???

Use a heavy pick. You don't want the pick to bend when you pluck the strings.

If your thing is using pork chops to make music...go ahead and use them, There's nothihg written anywhere stating that a bass is to be played with with fingers or pick...
Make sure you let us know what fish you bought.

You're a fish.
If absolutely forced to play one bass only forever I'd pick a Jazz. Tonally they "do it" for me. Doesn't matter where they are made or by whom. They just sound good.
