I was thinking about replacing some end blocks with brushed aluminum like those on the JP8, primarily as a space-saving play (a few inches can make or break re-use of a flight case). I'm not sure what trade to research for getting brushed aluminum panels made from a template or if anyone is already in this business specific to musical gear?
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks, Eric

Eric, look for metal fabricators in your area (they can tell you what they work with). It might require you to use the currant end block as a template, but its a start to work from.

If you're going to bother, go steampunk: use 1/4" iron plate, pattern it randomly with a grinder and file, and acid etch it. That would look pretty damn cool

Hey Eric... I know of one in this business in the UK. You'll dig this, knowing your fondness for customized wood end-blocks and whatnots: http://www.customsynth.co.uk/
Check out the "Gallery" links... very cool stuff.

I've seen that Custom Synth site before - very cool stuff. Similar to Forat's offerings, but perhaps a little less bling.
Someone on the other forum linked me to a shop that makes custom face plates and stuff like that and there is a good metal fabricator in town, but thinking I'm going to stick with the exotic wood end cheeks, like the Bolivian rosewood I put on my S90.

Eric, I was gonna mention Bruce Forat. If anyone has done exactly what you describe, it's him.

Eric, humor us if you may. How much did something like Bolivian Rosewood end caps cost?

Eric, humor us if you may. How much did something like Bolivian Rosewood end caps cost?
I have a good friend who is a High School wood working (aka "Shop") teacher. He also builds very nice Arts & Crafts/Shaker furniture in a shop he built behind his house. I have been buying furniture from him for years and it is some cool isht. I had him make the end caps for me at the same time I was getting some other things from him, so he did not charge me what he might charge the average customer. He also had the scrap of rosewood in his shop, but said it was probably about $100 piece of wood (very pretty with lots of character). I had asked him later what he would charge someone else, like someone I referred from this forum and I'm pretty sure he said something like $75 each, depending on type of wood (he has lots of walnut and heart pine, but other exotics are not so common). So I'd estimate the "real cost" of my end caps was about $200.
The other ones I'm thinking about may be Koa and I would probably get that from a local wood dealer and have my friend make them. Depending on what we work out, it should not be too expensive (I have over a dozen pieces of his furniture in my house). Might be hard getting on his list for a small job, as he is usually booked out about a year in advance on commissioned projects like beds, tables, cabinets, etc.
Regards, Eric
