The duo I play country music for (Nik and Sam) has received news from Warner Bros. Their album is to be finished by August, first single out in January, and touring begins in February.

I have no idea if I'm going to be asked to tour with them or not. For all I know, Warner will replace the band with their own guys (it's Nik and Sam that's been signed, not the band).

Anybody have any idea what I should expect if asked? How long do tours run? How much pay is involved? I have a wife and 2 kids under 5 years old - how long am I going to be away from them?

I have many questions, obviously. I've been avoiding thinking about this whole situation until I knew something more concrete about the future of Nik and Sam's album. The concrete truck has come!

Probably your best bet at this point. In any case, your wife may have a little to say. Last time I had a chance my wife at the time told me if I went to just keep going.

I really don't have fond memories of touring. The first time I did it it was with 3 other guys in a van. It stunk like socks and pot and we all almost starved to death. Junk food, dive bars and campground showers. I came home broke.
The second time was 2 guys and a girl and it was a car and a van and hotel rooms and much fewer intoxicants. I came home broke.

Did you play on the album or did they use studio musicians? That can be a sign right there. If you played on the record odds are much higher that you'll do a tour as well.

There are way too many possible answers for all those questions. You'll need to wait and see. I'd suggest not worrying about it terribly until you find out if you are going out on the road with them oar knot. It never hurts to ask them, "Hey, should I plan on going on the road with you clowns? I need to know so I can start making arrangements now."

None of us in the band played on the record. Their producers are smokin' players (one of them, the bass player, played on one of Sting's albums) and it simply didn't make sense to fly us to L.A. when the producers were there to play it (better) anyway. But I do know that neither of the producers have any intention of going on the road again. They both really like what they're doing now.

I was told quite a while back that they had the option written in the contract to keep their current band if they chose. As of our last gig, I was still under the impression that they were still wanting us.

They've changed promoters a couple of times, and since then gigs have been few and far between.

I wonder why the artists themselves haven't told you yet? I assume they were in attendance during your sessions?

One thing I have never gotten to do is tour. I feel like my band could, especially seeing some of the bands that I've seen open up for groups like the Black Crowes and other big name bands that (loosely) fit our calling. I feel like we belong up there instead... and not just in a jealous high school way. Seriously, if some of those openers are good for anything, then people ought to be licking my band's boots! Okay, I'm off the soap box.

Chewie: I hope, if it's meant for you, that you get chosen to have this experience, because new experiences are often a great blessing. I bet it could be a lot of fun, especially if the artist you're backing can draw a good crowd.

The artists are 16 yr old twin girls and they are managed by the producers in L.A. that I mentioned earlier. I'm pretty sure they want us (the current band), but we don't know if the studio will just step in and go, "okay, you and you can stay, but you need to go. Thanks. Have a nice day."

TheirSpace is Nik And Sam

Really? Then it sounds like the managers will be calling the shots and not the artist. With that in mind I wouldn't necessarily be optimistic. The management doesn't have the attachment to the band that the artist might. But there's also the possibility that they could try to keep from messing with things and keep the band lineup intact. I would try to prepare myself for any and all eventualities.

They didn't use you in the studio. I wouldn't worry too much about them using you on the road. No matter what they are telling you now.

Reality.

It may turn out that you are hired for the touring band, but this is highly unlikely. Warner Bros. signed the girls. You are, sadly, expendable.
