Hi folks.
I've been enjoying lurking here, learned a lot.
After admiring all the things Zawinul did by putting a Rhodes through effects, I'd like to try getting a phaser, a chorus, and a wah and/or envelope follower. These would need to deal well with a line level at their inputs rather than a guitar signal -- I'll be using them with synths.
Old or new is fine. Wish I had the Biphase and Mutron Joe was using . . .
Thanks for your thoughts.

What kind of gear do you have? Many modern instruments have those effects built in and are quite good.

My favorite synth effect is delay- check out electro harmonix memory man, roland re-20, nova delay, or the pigtronix echolution(my favorite).
wahs- clyde mcCoy, moogfooger lowpass filter w/expression pedal, vox, some like the Crybaby but its really not my thing
reverb- holy grail is a good one. I don't know about many others
chorus- analog man chorus is the best IMO
Phaser- I like the EHX small stone, or even the electric mistress . I'm not so hot on the Phase 90, unless its vintage. The boss phaser is not bad either for a digital.
Envelope filter- I've only heard the q-tron and it is GOOD
Distortions/fuzzs- RAT, english muff'n, big muff pi, zvex fuzz factory(this is an awesome fuzz and can to many more crazy things than fuzz)
there are a lot of vintage pedals that sound awesome if you have the cash. I would just tend to stay away from digitech and behringer- I've never heard one that sounded that great. electro harmonix make great, cheaper pedals that all sound pretty frickin good

If a Rackmount is an option, look at a Lexicon MX300. Don't think it does wahs though.

Thanks everybody!
To answer the question above, I'd be using these with old synths (ax80, six trak, dx100, cz101--so no onboard fx) and even with some of my soft synths & samplers to add a different color. The timbres would be mostly standard keyboard stuff (ep, clav, string, pad, etc).
This is for recording purposes, so I can add reverb elsewhere in the signal chain.
Have a deluxe Memory Man for the delay thing.
Moog Man -- thanks for all the suggestions, this is exactly the kind of stuff I'm wondering about.
Thanks again folks!

I use a Vox Tonelab to mangle and dirty up my signals. Take a look at the various amp modelers and test drive them...

I just got the new EH Stereo Memory Man w/ Hazarai, and I love it. It's a really tweakable delay/looper, has a great capacity for wierd sounds, and has a "smart" reverse feature that is kinda spooky. It shares virtually nothing with the classic Memory Man (which I also own) other than the name.

exactly, in my motif XS I have every possible effect I'd ever need, and they are excellent.

I still us my Roland CE-1 Chorus, the original. It too is Vintage, and MONO. it does have two outputs though. I use it for one side of my Alesis ION, which doesn't have very much of an FX engine. That was by design of course. The only thing "wrong" with Vintage effects units is the are noisy. Roland makes a digital version of the CE-1 and it's supposed to be a lot more flexible and quieter than the original.
I like a Chorus effect because it slightly detunes the signal and allows you to add a vibrato effect that can be adjusted. Very nice for analog synth sounds.
I think that rack based FX are the best investment because you can use it on any channel on mixer, so it can be used for more than one instrument.
