I use a Firewire 1814 interface and I am attempting to use a third balanced mic in the #3 unbalanced input of the unit. While that input accomodates a TS plug and the cable from the mic is a TRS, how do I get it to work? Is there a cable which converts from TRS to TS? I've tried just plugging in the TRS but it doesn't work.

http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-SHU-A95UFM . Or you could build a resistor network, but this is so much easier, and you know it'll match up correctly. Just make sure the unbalanced input is set for mic level, not line level. Now that I think about it, if the tip of the TRS corresponds to XLR pin 2 on the mic cable, it should work as is if you're indeed plugged into a mic-level input.

Apparently on the Firewire 1814, you only have 2 mic-level inputs available at one time. Adding a third mic into any other input while using the 2 XLR mic inputs probably won't work without first running the third mic into a preamp(in order to boost it to line level). Then a line input will see enough signal. A simple transformer(above link) won't give this boost. Neither will a cable rewire.

Best, Paul

The 1814 TRS inputs are line level. You need a mic pre before these to plug the mic into.

While it is possible to use a Hi-Z mic in these, and an unbalanced one at that (most are) the quality would be very inferior, and the mic would have to be dynamic, as the line inputs do not send phantom power.

My recommendation would be a stand alone mic pre with a balanced line level out before the line input to the 1814.
